The History of Baccarat

The History of Baccarat
by Jason Green of Predictem.com

It is believed that the game of Baccarat was derived from a game that was played in the Middle Ages. There are still debates on where the game of Baccarat came from and several countries in Europe stake the claim that Baccarat is theirs. There are many versions of the story but the one that is most prominent is that Baccarat was invented in the Middle Ages by a gambler from Italy named Felix Falguierein. The first game of Baccarat used a deck of Tarot cards.

There is a legend from medieval times that suggest that Baccarat comes form an old ritual. In the ancient ceremony there were 9 gods that prayed to a blond virgin and then waited for her, as she threw a die that had nine sides. The fate of the blond virgin would be decided by the number that she threw. If the virgin threw either an 8 or a 9 she was to become a priestess. If the virgin threw either a 6 or a 7 she would be banned from all religious activities in the future. If the virgin threw either a 5 or below a 5 she would perish by walking into the ocean.

Baccarat in Europe

There are some historians that believe the game is actually based on Tarot cards. Tarot cards were first seen around 1490 in Italy. The name of Baccarat is derived from the Italian word of “bacara” which means zero. This is shown in the zero value of the royal face cards, as well as the 10 cards, that are in the game of Baccarat.

Baccarat spread to France in the later part of the 15th century. During this time the French changed the name, first to "Baccarat en Banque" and then to "Chemin de Fer", which is French for railway. In this game the casino is not the banker, as the players would take turns being the banker, the dealer, and then they would bet among the other players in the game. The French aristocracy played the game of Chemin de Fer and it was a very popular game in the high rungs of French society. As the game grew in popularity it reached England and was immediately popular. The English updated the name and called it “European Baccarat”, which is widely available online.

Baccarat in the United States

In the later part of the 1950’s Tommy Renzoni brought the game of Baccarat to the United States. The game, which was brought over, was a combination of the French Chemin de Fer and the English European Baccarat. The Dunes casino was the first casino in Las Vegas to introduce Baccarat in the late 1950’s. It was first brought to Las Vegas after the government of Cuba closed down the casinos in Havana.

Even though the rules of Baccarat are slightly different for each country the style of the game has not changed. The game of Baccarat is synonymous with high rollers, such as the fictitious James Bond. To cater to the gambler that does not have high-roller pockets Mini Baccarat was invented, which has lower table limits. Baccarat has some of the best odds of any casino game. Since Internet Casinos are very popular these days many of the larger casinos online offer Baccarat as one of their table games.

Baccarat is a game whereby the croupier gathers in money with a flexible sculling oar, then rakes it home. If I could have borrowed his oar I would have stayed. ~ Mark Twain
