Baccarat Glossary

· Baccarat – The worst Baccarat hand, which is the total of zero.
· Banker/Player Bet – the two main bets in Baccarat, besides betting on the tie, which is either betting on the Banker’s (dealer) hand or the Player’s hand.
· Banco – (meaning bank) “Banco” is said by the player when they decide to bet all their money.
· Bank – Is the hand that is dealt last and acts last.
· Burn – Means to discards at the start of the shoe.
· Callman – The dealer who either runs the game or calls the game.
· Croupier – The term for dealer that is used in France.
· Dealer – The person who works the Baccarat game.
· Down Card – The card that is dealt face down.
· Face Cards – The Jack, Queen, and King of any suit.
· Fade – Means to cover either all or a part of the bank bet. Is also called cover or cover the bank.
· High Roller – Term for a player that makes very large bets.
· House Edge – The term for the advantage that the casino has over the player. Baccarat has the best house edge for players.
· Le Grande – The French term for the 9 that is dealt in a natural.
· Le Petite – The French term for the 8 that is dealt in a natural.
· Lace – This is the term for when the cards are placed randomly into one stack of cards.
· Mini Baccarat – This is a variation of baccarat that has a smaller table, fewer seats at the table, and only has one dealer not 2 dealers and a Callman. The version of Baccarat that is predominately played in casinos.
· Muck – 8 decks of cards used in a Baccarat game. (Total of 416 cards)
· Natural – This is the original hand that has the first two cards that total either 8 or 9.
· Palette – The wooden tool that is used to move the cards on a Baccarat table.
· Player Hand – This is the hand that plays against the bank (dealer) hand that receives cards and then acts by itself.
· Punto – The player in Baccarat.
· Rule Card – The rule card for both Baccarat and Chemin de Fer.
· Sabot – The French term for shoe
· Shoe – The wooden box that is used in Baccarat for both holding and dispensing the cards that will be dealt out.
· Shooter – A nickname given to the bank.
· Standoff – This is what a tie is called. For example, a standoff between the player and the dealer, meaning they have the same total number of points.
· Tie Bet – Where neither the bank (dealer) nor the player win the hand.
· Up Card – The card that is dealt face up.
· Vigorish – The commission of 5% that is charged on the banker
hands if they have won the hand.
