Identifying the Best Moments to Gamble at Blackjack
by Predictem.com Staff

Blackjack may be seen as one of the simpler casino games but that doesn't mean there aren't a whole host of strategies and theories that might tip the odds in your favour. A lot of them are statistical, based around the laws of probability, while others are more subtle and linked to the psychology of play.

This is by no means a definitive list of ways you could get the better of the dealer, but it'll give you a good place to start.

Know when to split and when not to

The temptation to split can be great when you've got a pair in your hand looking at it positively it means that you're potentially doubling your chances of beating the dealer. But it's crucial that you know when it's a good time to split.

A few factors affect your decision firstly what your pair is, secondly the upcard that the dealer has revealed and, finally, how many decks of cards are in play. Unfortunately there's no simple way of deciding, so the best thing to do is learn the basic strategy for blackjack. This is a mathematically tested list of possible scenarios that will tell you the way to play to give you the best chance of coming out on top.

One tip to remember is that a pair of 8s should always be split if you don't want to be left with 16 - in blackjack this is the worst hand you can have.

Doubling down

There are also a number of conventions that govern whether you choose to double down and, again, these depend on your cards and the dealer's upcard. Generally speaking, it could be time to double down when you're holding a higher score than the dealer - for example, if you have a count of 10 and the dealer's showing an upcard of 9 or less.

Count the cards - but be careful!

Card counting has long been considered a good way of calculating the likelihood that high scoring cards are still to be dealt and, strictly speaking, isn't against the rules. However many casinos frown on the practice and this is one of the reasons that many have six or eight decks in play at any one time after all having to keep track of up to 416 cards is a much harder prospect than just 52.

Plus, in many cases casinos have been known to bar players for using the technique as well as warning other casinos that a player is a known card counter.

You could write a book about all the ways to improve your chances of beating the dealer in blackjack, and this is obviously just skimming the surface. One thing to remember though, is that many of the winning techniques described here can be memorised and, over the longer term, you stand a very good chance of coming out on top.
