Blackjack Betting Strategy
by Jerald of Predictem.com
On a recent trip to Las Vegas I was sitting in my room and a friend #2 comes in and says “wow, you should have seen how hot friend #3 was at the Blackjack table”. When friend #3 came into the room I asked if he had a great night. He said yeah, he had a great run. I asked him how much he won and he said “oh, I ended up about even for the night”. This is a common occurrence for Blackjack players who do not implement a sound money management practice. They display poor betting techniques that even during hot runs result in small profits at best. The cold runs typically wipe out their bankrolls. In this article we will look at some betting systems and discuss if they are proper to use.
The first assumption is that you are able to play the basic Blackjack strategy. This will lower the house edge to under 1% and give you the best chance for winning other than card counting. The next factor is to determine your betting pattern. Here are some possibilities:
Flat Betting – This means that you bet the same amount each and every bet. The good thing is that you won’t lose much but overall the casino will grind your bankroll away and this is not recommended.
Willy Nilly Method – This is a term that I use for a buddy that just bets from the seat of his pants with no regard for how things are going. He will bet anywhere from 1-5 units on a hand whether he is winning or losing. Again, I don’t recommend this kind of reckless wagering.
Martingale – This is a system where you double your bet after each loss. The idea is that you will win sooner or later. This is a bad idea because an extended losing streak will wipe out your bankroll.
The Parlay Betting Method – With this system you let your winnings ride to increase your next bet. This can be used successfully in the short term but if you use it you must remember to pull back profits at some time because a losing hand is inevitable.
The D’alembert Method – This method is used by many gamblers and it goes like this. You start with a multiple unit bet and if you win you decrease the bet by 1 unit, if you lose you increase your bet by unit. The theory is that you will win your larger bets and lose your smaller ones. This method has been proved mathematically to not be successful and is not recommended for Blackjack.
Reverse then Progress Method – I am not sure what this is called but here is how it works. Your progression is as follows 2-1-2-3-4-5 … If you get above a 5 unit wager you continue to add 1 unit for each win. When you lose you revert back to the beginning with 2 unit bet. This system can be used effectively because if the table is choppy with wins and losses you can win a 2 unit bet then lose 1 and so on. You also have a chance for a big score if you hit a nice winning streak. This method is recommended and would be my 2nd choice.
Up and Pull – This system is similar to the one above except you don’t revert back after your first win. The progression starts with a 2 unit bet and looks like this 2-2-3-4-5-6 …. This allows you to start increasing your bets after you have 2 wins. This way you are guaranteed a profit if you win 2 of 3 bets since you will have 2 2unit wins and a 3 unit loss for a net win of 1 unit. If you are lucky enough to get past 3 wins you will have a very nice profit for your hot streak. As soon as you lose you MUST revert back to a 2 unit play and start the progression over. This is more of a grind it out method and is my preferred way to bet blackjack.
