Tomasz Adamek, 39-1 (27 KOs), Jersey City, NJ. (-500) Vs. Jason Estrada, 16-2 (4 KOs), Providence, RI. (+300)
Analysis: Adamek appears to have left the cruiserweight division behind for good. After tormenting Andrew Golota in his last fight, he takes on former amateur standout Jason “Six Guns” Estrada on Saturday night in yet another heavyweight appearance.
Adamek looked great against Golota, though Golota has seen better days. Nevertheless, he seemed comfortable with the added weight, and was able to showcase his high-activity, combination punching against his much larger opponent and fellow-Polish superstar. Adamek has earned the unusual distinction of being called one of the sport’s most improved fighters while moving up in weight. Whereas most smaller fighters struggle as the size of their opponents increase, Adamek has not. He has looked great since losing his light heavyweight belt to Chad Dawson.
Fighting in Newark in front of a large Polish contingency at the Prudential Center is right up Adamek’s alley, having fought 3 of his last 4 bouts there. Estrada, from Providence, will have some support, but the rabid, pro-Adamek throng that will be in attendance will drown it out.
Estrada is a pretty good heavyweight. A decorated amateur, he was good enough to represent the USA in the 2004 Athens Olympics. But as a pro, he hasn’t really distinguished himself. It’s difficult to imagine him getting a decision in Newark, which is Adamek territory, and with only 4 KO’s in 18 fights; he isn’t going to be able to stop the durable Pole.
Look for Estrada’s hand speed and overall boxing ability to keep him in the fight for a few rounds. Then look for Adamek’s attack to begin winning the day. Estrada has shown himself to be durable, and might go some rounds. He may rise to the occasion and give Adamek a difficult tussle, but Adamek wins this one going away, whether by late-rounds stoppage or by unanimous decision.
Scotty’s Pick: Lay the –500 on Tomasz Adamek to win.
