How to Play Pai Gow Poker
By Wilson of Predictem.com
The history of Pai Gow Poker goes all the way back to ancient China where the game first originated. Pai gow used to be played with actual dominoes instead of cards but according to the Chinese lore there is no difference between dominoes and cards. The word “Pai Gow” means “make nine” in Chinese. However, in today’s contemporary casinos players can enjoy the game of Pai gow as it has been adapted and transformed into one the most relaxing, popular, and affordable table games both in online casinos and in land-based casinos such as on the Vegas strip or in Atlantic City.
How the Game is Played:
Pai gow is played with a 53 card deck in which the 53rd card is used as a wild card and often times appears as a joker. The game can be played in online casinos from the comfort of your own home, or if you decide to fly to the Las Vegas Hilton for a weekend you will find that the game is hosted on a blackjack sized table with room for up to six players. The game has recently taken off over the past ten years as people realized how fun it can be.
Most people enjoy the game because they can get their money’s worth as pai gow is a slow playing game of poker where the player and the house often push therefore no money is won or lost. Players can buy-in at a table for $20 and play for hours on the same $20! What a deal!
Pai gow (pronounced pie-gow) is an altered version of poker where the player must manage to operate two hands of poker instead of the typical one hand. The main object is to develop two hands that will beat the dealer’s hands.
Just like most casino games you must first acquire chips and then place a bet (at least the table minimum) in order to play. The dealer will then deal each player seven cards as well as seven cards for himself. Now you will have two hands to build. The first hand is known as your “high” hand and it must be of higher value than your “low” hand. The high hand consists of your highest five card poker total while your low hand will be your lowest poker total. Your high hand must be stronger than your low hand in order to qualify for competition against the dealer.
As mentioned above, your goal is to create two hands that will beat the dealer’s hands, so it will behoove you to understand the basic rankings of a poker hand before you begin play.
Pai gow also uses that wild card which bumps the traditional royal flush from the top of the “best hand” in poker and replaces it with a five of a kind (five aces). Also, in pai gow, if a player’s hand and the dealer’s hand equal the same value there is no push; the win goes to the dealer! The joker can only be used as an ace or to finish three hand combinations such as a straight, a flush, or a straight flush.
Here are the winning hand combinations in pai gow:
· Five aces
· Royal flush
· Straight flush
· Four of a kind
· Three of a kind
· Two pair
The best part about pai gow is you get to relax a bit compared to the speed of other casino table games. Always check the table minimums and the payouts as they vary from casino to casino. Online casinos will usually allow you to play for free until you get the grasp of the game. Luck to ya.
