The days of the old mafia strong-hold on casinos are a memory. Although I’m sure there are a few “old school” mobsters who attempt to rule the roost by the use of force.

Today’s casinos are clear, legal, and watched closely by the government. The chance of a casino cheating you is pretty slim as they would risk losing their license or be forced to pay incredibly large fines. The reason for such strict rules is because the casinos already have an edge by carrying the house advantage.

However, most casinos attract a variety of clientele. Casinos are in the business to make money, and to do that they usually offer a little something for everyone. Thus, a casino will have penny slot machines for the low-ball gamblers and a thousand dollar a hand blackjack for the high rollers. In any event, there is a lot of cash floating around the casino and some people will try to steal it!

Unfortunately, casinos also attract the thief or thug who has no other agenda but to rob you of your money! These low life losers will do almost anything to separate you from your cash! I’ve seen people grab change cups from old ladies who were playing the nickel slots- guess what? They got caught, but most of them usually get away. Let’s take a look at some ideas that may help you avoid losing your money.

Be aware of your surroundings. Simply sweep the area with your eyes periodically; looking for anyone suspicious. If you think you are being targeted by a thug find a security person or a casino employee and they can help you.

Never carry your money in your back pocket. I always carry my money in my front pocket as this tends to foil even the best pick-pockets.

Consider purchasing a money belt. This is the best way to conceal your cash in a while gambling.

Only take the money you have decided to gamble for that session. Leave the rest of your cash or currency in the hotel safe deposit box. Never leave money in your hotel room, even if it does have a safe as some casino employees can be dishonest as well.

Look out for chip snatchers! Yes, it’s true, chip snatchers is not a new horror film but a reality at many casino table games. The craps table is perhaps, the most likely game for chip snatchers to target as craps is fast moving and usually very crowded. Don’t fall for that cute blond who acts like she’s asking you for advice when she’s actually snatching your chips!

Travel in pairs. Most robbers prey on the individual rather than the group or couple. The “buddy system” that we used as kids is still a valuable system as gambling adults!

Be careful when you approach the cashier’s booth or the casino bank. Many professional thieves work in groups and will deliberately distract you while another member takes the cash. After the cash is stolen it usually is passed off to yet, another member who may pass it off again in an attempt to confuse security. Keep sharp with your money!

Finally, if you are doing well at a table or a slot machine and attract a lot of people because of your play, never announce how much money you have won or lost. It’s none of their business. As sad as it is to say, we've seen elderly people get cold cocked out on the street once out of the secure environment of the casino. Yes, it’s exciting to win but use common sense and protect yourself. As for us, we'll continue to stay home in our comfy recliner and play at online casinos on the laptop!
