Boston College Eagles vs. Clemson Tigers Preview and Pick

Boston College Eagles (2-0, 1-0 ATS) at Clemson Tigers (1-1, 2-0 ATS) Death Valley Clemson, SC Saturday September 19th, 12:00PM Eastern
By Jay Horne of Predictem.com

Point Spread: BC +6.5/Clemson -6.5
Over/Under: 44

The high flying Eagles of Boston College roll into Death Valley early Saturday to take on inner conference foe Clemson in a early afternoon showdown. Boston College is off to a quick 2-0 start over less than impressive opponents. However, the Eagles have posted 88 points in those 2 games and look to keep the momentum rolling on offense this Saturday. Clemson comes off a close loss to Georgia Tech last Thursday.

The Tigers were embarrassed in the first half down by as much as 21-0 in the first half. However, freshman quarterback Kyle Parker was able to hook up with some of the speedy playmakers and nearly mounted a big comeback. The Tigers anticipating for a big season still has plenty of opportunities, but they can not afford to lose to the Eagles and drop to 1-2. Boston College on the other hand was not expected to contend make a lot of noise in the ACC this year, but an early victory over Clemson could open some eyes.

The most interesting battle on the field this Saturday will be the Clemson defensive line against the Boston College offensive front. Clemson is strong and fast up front on defense. However, they will be battling with quite possibly the best offensive line in the conference. The big guys up front not only give great opportunities for freshman quarterbacks Justin Tuggle and Dave Shinskie, but also provide plenty of room for tailback Montel Harris. Harris has rushed for 181 yards in 2 games averaging over 5 yards per carry and will get plenty of touches this Saturday. Harris could be a big factor depending on how the freshman quarterbacks perform.

Dave Shinskie has gotten the most starts, but that is not to say that Tuggle will not see the playing field. Both quarterbacks have very little experience, but have failed to make many mistakes this season. Shinskie has the lone interception between the two quarterbacks and these young guys can't afford to get rattled if they plan to keep ball control on their side. Each player will be looking for WR Rich Gunnell on the outside. The senior wide out is a big play threat for the Eagles and will be a primary target for the passing game. The Eagles must establish some type of effectiveness through the air and post points on the scoreboard. One thing Clemson does well is find the end zone so the Eagles must be able to equal their firepower.

The Clemson Tigers offense has playmakers all over the field. The Tigers actually have so many weapons it sometimes questionable how they do not put up much bigger numbers on offense. Running back C.J. Spiller is an elusive threat out of the backfield that is just as effective catching passes out of the backfield. Spiller caught a 63 yard touchdown pass on a flanker route out of the backfield last week in a big play that actually turned the momentum in the game. WR Jacobi Ford is among the fastest players in college football. If defenders sleep for one minute, Ford can make them pay with lightning speed. Ford also caught a big pass in the Tigers loss last Thursday. Ford burned the Yellow Jackets defense on a 77 yard bomb which was the longest reception of his career.

The game will come down to freshman quarterback Kyle Parker's ability to get the ball in the hands of the playmakers. The Tigers have failed to be very impressive on the ground over the last few years so if things are to happen it will likely be through the air. Parker has done a good job this year, but there are slight concerns with accuracy given he has already thrown 2 picks this year. If Clemson can prevent the turnovers and keep the ball in the hands of their big time players, then they should be good. Also, do not forget both Spiller and Ford share the field on both punt and kick returns giving them a big edge in special teams.

Jay's Pick - Clemson -6.5.
