The state of Texas is considered by some people to be the “Holy Land” of football in the United States. From high school’s Friday Night Lights to the thousands of college game day fans who pack the stadiums across the state, Texas is responsible for a great portion of our football entertainment. Saturday will be no different.
No. 1 Texas will travel in state to take on No. 6 Texas Tech in a battle of unbeaten NCAA power houses. This game will determine the beginning or end for one of these team’s chances at a National Championship campaign.
The Longhorns, who have not been tested all year until last week’s squeaker of a win over the Oklahoma State Cowboys 28-24 will have their hands full this weekend in Lubbock with the Red Raiders. Texas Tech hasn’t started a season 8-0 since 1938. They will look forward to the challenge on their home field.
Heisman hopeful Colt McCoy made yet another effort that should aid in his quest as college football’s most elite player as he threw for 391 yards on 38-of-45 passing and 2 touchdowns. McCoy also carried the ball 10 times for 41 yards and a rushing TD as well. Texas wide receiver, Jordan Shipley pulled 15 receptions for 168 yards and 1 TD. The Longhorns were an impressive 11 of 15 on third down conversions-78% or better as they had 10 more first downs than OSU.
McCoy did have some big turnovers that could have been game threatening but his defense stepped up by applying pressure and picking up 5 sacks in the win.
Texas Tech comes into the game after beating Kansas 63-21. The Red Raiders QB, Graham Harrell threw for 386 yards and 5 touchdowns. Harrell is now ahead of Philip Rivers for 4th place on the all-time career passing yardage list. This marks the ninth game that Harrell has thrown for 5 TD’s or more. The Red Raiders scored 7 of the last 8 TD’s to close out the game in what turned out to be a route.

Both of these teams will make Texas proud but I have to lean towards Colt McCoy and his unwavering confidence and control in big-time games. McCoy has already proven he can win huge games, and when tested, he remains calm and executes well. Oklahoma State had the Longhorns in a tight spot as McCoy did turn the ball over a couple of times. However, the Longhorns did prevail, and I think it made them even stronger having overcome a near defeat. The Longhorns will clean up their act and be ready to take on Texas Tech on Saturday.
Wilson’s Pick: I’m so jealous of the state of Texas and their great football programs! I like the Longhorns to win and cover the 6 points. McCoy has another stellar performance as Texas holds on 35-28 in a tight game.
