The Big 12 ruled the nation last year posting huge numbers on offense. Both Oklahoma and Texas Tech ranked in the top 5 in the country posting over 500 yards a game and an additional 44 plus points at least. Those types of numbers had most expectations for the 2009 high for both schools with Conference Championship hopes and of course National Title hopes as well.
However, the offenses have not lived up to those huge number expectations and as a result neither Oklahoma nor Texas Tech is alive in just the Big 12 North race holding down records of 6-4. One of those disappointing seasons will continue this weekend when the Red Raiders host the Sooners in an early Saturday showdown as both teams look to find their rhythm after recent embarrassing losses.
Texas Tech is coming off their most recent defeat against Oklahoma State 24-17 and also allowed Texas A&M to post 52 points in another loss just a few weeks back. The Red Raiders defense has allowed 24 points per game and they have had their struggles this year. However, the Red Raiders have posted their share of blowouts over opponents as well this season maintaining a 38 point average on the season. Junior quarterback Taylor Potts has been able to record 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Potts has been able to throw for 2,411 yards on the year including some time out in the middle of the season meaning the Red Raiders passing offense is still a dangerous group In fact, the passing offense ranks 2nd in the country averaging 391 yards per contest. Junior WR Detron Lewis has racked up 700 yards and also Tramain Swindall has just less than 600 yards as well. The two guys have combined for 10 touchdowns this season and expect there to be more this Saturday as both offenses may be in store for a high scoring shootout.
Oklahoma still carries the perception as one of the most dangerous offenses in the country and perhaps rightfully so. However, it is the Oklahoma defense that has been truly impressive. The Sooners are allowing just 12 points per game on the season and have only given up over 20 points twice on the year. Oklahoma also ranks 1st against the pass holding opponents to just 178 yards per game. The Sooners secondary will have to remain strong as they will be under fire from Potts and the Red Raiders offense this weekend. The goal is to keep the dangerous Texas Tech passing attack grounded and keeping it to a low score game.

However, surprisingly the Sooners have lost all the close low scoring games this season. In the Sooners 6 wins this season they have not score any less than 33 points. However, in the losses the offense has been held to 20 points or less. Those losses have not been by any big defeats either as Oklahoma has lost by just 12 points combined in all 4 losses this season. Therefore those trends tell us it is best when the Sooners offense post a ton of points. Leading those efforts will be freshman QB Landry Jones who has taken over duties for the injury ridden Sam Bradford.
Jones has thrown 22 touchdowns with just 12 interceptions on the year. WR Ryan Broyles has been really dangerous catching 60 passes for 744 yards and 11 touchdowns. Of course the Oklahoma running backs are still one of the most dangerous duos in the country. Chris Brown has posted 608 yards on the year and DeMarco Murray is just a carry shy of the 600 yard mark. Both tailbacks are averaging just less than 5 yards per carry and have 12 touchdowns combined on the ground. Murray has also added the passing game very well ranking 2nd on the team in reception yards with an additional 469 yards through the air. Oklahoma has played well against vulnerable defenses this year as most of their struggles have come against the better defenses teams. However, that will not be the case here as the Oklahoma defense will be the difference and the offense will roll.
