The Oregon State Beavers will travel to southern California this week to to prepare for their matchup with the USC Trojans on Saturday. Last year the Beavers knocked off the then No. 3 Trojans at Reeser Stadium in Corvallis. Beaver running back Jacquizz Rodgers was a one-man wrecking crew as the USC defense had a heck of a time trying to keep him contained. Rodgers is back as well as his brother James, who is a receiver for OSU. The Trojan’s will certainly be looking for revenge on last year’s loss. USC Head coach Pete Carroll has already watched his guys fall to Pac-10 rival Washington, and you can bet that he has sent a clear message to his staff regarding this week’s focus.
USC meanwhile has been doing what they do best- winning. The Trojans are coming off of a huge road win at Notre Dame. Trojan’s freshman QB Matt Barkley had another stellar outing. Barkley was 19 of 29 for 380 yards and 2 touchdowns. Damien Williams had four grabs for 108 yards and two TDs. Anthony McCoy pulled in five catches for 153 yards for USC as well. Running back Joe McKnight carried the ball 19 times for 79 yards to help the Trojan’s effort.
Oregon State is coming off a significant win at home against the Stanford Cardinal 38-28. The victory bumped the Cardinal from the top spot in the Pac-10 thus opening the door to the conference title race.
The Beavers were led by, you guessed it, running back Jacquizz Rodgers. Rodgers went off for a career high 189 yards rushing. He also scored four touchdowns which tied a record at OSU held by a handful of other players. Beaver QB Sean Canfield was 22 of 32 for 290 yards and 1 touchdown. James Rodgers also scored a touchdown to go along with his 6 receptions for 78 yards.
USC’s defense is once again one of the top defenses against the rush. The Trojans only give up 67 yards on the ground per game to their opponents. They are also only allowing 11.7 points per game to the opposition. On the otherhand, the Beavers are giving up nearly 23 points each outing to their opponents while allowing a modest 97 yards on the ground but yeilding 275 through the air. Both teams are averaging nearly 29 points per game, and they both have a number of playmakers.
BET THE OREGON STATE BEAVERS AS +40.5 UNDERDOGS BY USING A 20 POINT TEASER AT 5 DIMES SPORTSBOOK
This Pac-10 matchup should be a good one between two teams in the upper half of the conference. USC’s defense should prevail and be the difference in this game. The Trojans offense can score but they have sputtered at times. Although the Trojans seem to have turned the corner offensively as of late it will be the defense that decides the outcome.
OSU is 2-0, 1-1 ATS, and 0-2 O/U on the road this season. USC is 2-0, 1-1 ATS, 1-1 O/U at home this year. The Beavers are 2-1, 2-1 ATS, 1-2 O/U as the underdog this year, and the Trojans are 5-1, 2-4 ATS, 2-4 O/U as the favorite this season.
Trojan QB Matt Barkley may have a star cast surrounding him but he still has to make throws and solid decisions. Barkley versus OSU’s QB Canfeild, will be another interesting matchup within the matchup.
The online sportsbooks have the Trjoans at -20.5 while the Vegas boys are yet to post a line. I like Oregon State to play with the Trojans, and cover the spread. The Rodgers brothers will cause some problems for the Trojan defense again but this time it won’t be enough to win straight up.
Wilson’s Pick: USC 38, Oregon State 30. The Beavers cover in LA. Luck to ya.
