The Place Bet

Craps: The Place Bet
by Wilson of

If you want to get into the fast paced action of a craps game the best way to do it is to make a place bet. Why? Reasons may vary but most players don't want to wait around for the shooter to establish a point number, so they immediately make a place bet. The logic behind the place bet is to quickly have a number or numbers in conjunction with the pass line bet, thus giving the player multiple numbers in which they can win on. Although the best bet, arguably, on a craps table is the pass line with odds I don't discourage the place bet because it can be successful. An educated player who knows the percentages can easily make a lot of money over time given their on a hot table.

How do I make a place bet? The place bet is another dealer-only made bet. To make it easy as far as whom actually places the bets, just remember that any bet from the come bet area and above is always made by the dealers, and bets below the come bet area are made by the players. For example, the come bet, pass line, don't pass, field, odds on the pass or don’t pass, and the big 6 or 8 are all wagers made by the player. Any bets located above the come area are always physically made by the dealers. So, to make the place the player must toss their chips toward the dealer, usually just above or in the come area and call out the bet by saying, “place the 6 please.” The dealer will repeat the request and place the chips in the top area of the 6 numbered box.

How do I win a place bet? To win a place bet all that has to happen is for the number to repeat before a seven is rolled. Let’s look at an example of a place bet scenario. If a player makes a place bet on the 6 and the following rolls occur: 2, 5, 11, 9, and 6 – the player wins because the 6 was rolled before a seven. If the following dice sequence occurs: 5, 4, 12, 3, 7 – the player will lose because the seven showed before the 6.

What are the payoffs for each place bet? Great question! Read carefully here as it’s important to bet the correct amount or the casino will not pay the maximum odds for the bet. Here are the payoffs for each place bet:

Placing the 6 or 8 = 7 to 6 odds
Placing the 5 or 9 = 7 to 5 odds
Placing the 4 or 10 = 9 to 5 odds

In order to get the maximum odds payoff for a place bet the player should bet in units of $5 for all the numbers except the 6 and 8, which should be bet at $6. Any amount lower than the above suggested will not be paid maximum odds. For example, a wager on the 5 will be paid $7 for a $5 bet. If a place bet is wagered at less than $5 the casinos will only pay out 1 to 1 or even money, which is not a good deal. An easy way to remember the place bet payoff is by memorizing the particular payoff. For instance, the numbers 4, and 10 have a payoff of 9 to 5. Therefore, as the player, if you remember that the first number (9) listed in the payoff is the amount of dollars you will win if you bet the dollar amount of the second number (5). Of course if the player bets more money I would suggest simply doubling the amount to keep the math simple.

How do I get paid for a place bet? To get paid for a place bet the dealer will only give you your winnings and the original bet will remain on the layout. If you want your bet back just tell the dealer to “take down the eight” or whatever number you’ve placed. Also, the place bet can be taken down at anytime. If you don’t want to take down your place bet but would like to sit out or not have it working on a certain roll or rolls you can tell the dealer that your “off on the eight” and the dealer will place an off button on or near your chips. Remember to tell the dealer when you want the eight back on or say “I’m working on the eight.” However, the place bet is automatically off or not working on the come-out roll.

To win at craps a player should know what the casino’s edge is for every wager available and make bets that have the lowest casino advantage. Hey, the casinos will always have an advantage, but an educated player can trim the advantage considerably, make money, and have a great time.

As far as recommendations go, I would advice making place bets only on the 6 and 8 as these numbers are more likely to show due to the different combinations on the dice (5 ways to roll a 6 or 8).

Luck to ya.
