Craps: Dealer Tipping

Craps: Dealer Tipping
by Wilson of Predictem.com

Most dealers make around or just above minimum wage. Tipping is considered a bonus for dealers, but really, that’s how they make most of their money. If the service these dealers provide is sufficient then they can only hope that player you should pay attention to the quality of service you are receiving as this will determine whether or not you throw a couple of chips in for the dealers.

No matter what you do never say or yell out “for the boys!” as this is considered disrespectful in most settings. A simple “for the dealers please” will do just dandy when you decide to tip, and the dealers will appreciate the gesture.

Many players make random proposition bets in favor of the dealers, but these have a high house advantage, so try not to make a bet for the dealers on proposition bets. Instead, if you want to tip a dealer or all the dealers, perhaps you should make a bet for them on the pass line. Simply place a chip or chips next to your pass line wager and announce that this bet is for the dealers. In my opinion, it doesn’t hurt to make an odds wager for the dealers in addition to the pass line bet. This way the dealers will be compensated for their quality service by receiving one of the best bets as a tip from the player.

You do not have to tip the same amount as you are wagering. Most players wait until they are ahead before they tip the dealers. Remember that most dealers will have your best interest at heart as they know all to well how the average person will not tip unless they receive great service.

If you don’t feel comfortable placing a bet for the dealers you can always just give them a tip. Players are not allowed to actually hand the dealer chips or money; it must be tossed or placed on the table layout in front of the dealer. Tell the dealer or dealers that the chips are a tip for the dealers. Make sure the dealer acknowledges your request as I have heard stories about other players claiming the chips and actually making a wager with them! Some people don’t have a problem being dishonest!

What about the waitress who brings me drinks? Well, you are not required to tip the waitress but it’s pretty snooty if you don’t. The wait staff is a key to most gamblers comfort and overall experience in a casino. The least players can do is plan ahead and treat them with respect and tip them if they have earned it. In most cases a one dollar chip is all a player needs to tip per drink, and maybe a little more if the drink arrives in a timely manner. Don’t be surprised if your waitress overlooks you after she realizes that you are not going to tip as some waitresses will favor those players who make it worth their time and effort.

Remember, it’s easy to get caught up in all the fast-paced action at a craps table, but it’s also easy to forget about your server. I always make sure that I have at least five to ten one dollar chips available to tip for any drinks, food or other services offered. However, if you want to be a winner at the casino I suggest keeping your alcohol consumption to a minimum. Luck to ya.
