Teaches me for going out tonight and having an entire debate happen :)
Doctors get the shaft in this country, from both sides. I think they ought to at least be able to deduct the cost of malpractice insurance from their income.
But I will say it again, you could cancel all govt programs outside of perhaps military, service on debt, ss, and medicare, and you will still run a huge deficit that requires adding to the tax burden of your kids.
I do certainly agree we need to do something about illegal immigration and people that are here taking a free ride. That **** pisses me off too. And it double pisses off the people that do it through the correct channels. Funny enough, I was drinking beers this evening with my Nigerian neighbors, and THEY were complaining about the same thing.
In an ideal world, we don't have a 9T national debt, we don't have a baby boomer population coming through the system that strains our entitlement programs, and we don't have to fight like 3 wars at the same time. But we do, and that **** costs money. So we either print more money and go the Zimbabwe route, or we find our own way to fund all this.
So to fund it, since in a country of 300B or so people, nobody is going to jump all at once to solve the problem, you have to do it through the tax system. Ideally, you grow the economy such that you can handle the bets you are cashing, but we seem incapable of doing that at a rate that you need to solve the enormous problems we have.
Hate to say it, but we actually need more taxpayers. Maybe we need to declare amnesty, but on a condition you pay your taxes going forward. And we need cops to then enforce the ******* law so that people who are not following the rules are tossed. That also goes for the losers that hire these *******s that they know full damn well are here illegally undercutting the whole system.
But even then, you are going to need more money to shore up the system. At that point, you have to cut a deal with the rich and help them understand what they are getting for the extra tax dollars. I think if most people knew at that level that the money is going towards having a solvent country and that the money isn't being wasted, I think they would not mind it as much. But I 100% agree that if the taxes go up and suddenly, we have DMVs with free Starbucks coffee for government workers and **** like that, hell, I would be just as pissed as anyone.
I voted for Bush twice, Dole before that, and Perot before that. I am the last person most people would call a "liberal". But the last 8 years have demonstrated to me that the Republicans, when given power, are *just as bad* as the Democrats were before then - if not worse. My fear is that you get McCain in there, you get more wars - possibly with enemies that are far more dangerous than even Al Qaida (Russia), more junk spending, a woman who believes creationism ought to be taught alongside evolution as an "alternative theory" as VP, and no real movement on the greatest challenge of our time currently, moving to green energy so we can starve the people that are going to use energy as a bludgeon against us.
All in good fun, of course.
