I just started getting into heavily a year ago, and I am still learning everyday and have MUCH to learn. It's VERY VERY VERY difficult and there is a lot of stuff you need to know from what type of race it is, to blood lines, to trainers, to type of track surface, to running style, to speed figures, to layoff, and it goes on and on. It's not something you can do casually if you want to make money off of it.
