Kent State Inches Closer to MAC East Title With 76-66 Win At Buffalo
Courtesy: Kent State Athletic Communications
Release: 02/19/2008

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Kent State men’s basketball team won its fifth straight and moved a step closer to their sixth Mid-American Conferences East Division title in eight years with a 76-66 win at host Buffalo tonight. The win marked number 1,000 for the Golden Flashes program as they improve to 11-2 in the MAC and 22-5 overall. Buffalo fell to 2-11 MAC and 8-17 overall.

Junior Al Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J. / Pennsauken / Redlands C.C.) led KSU in scoring for a sixth straight game with his third 20-point game on the road this year. Fisher paced three double-figure scorers with 20 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals. Senior Haminn Quaintance (Sarasota, Fla. (Jacksonville University) the only player in NCAA history with over 1,200 points - 800 rebounds - 250 assists - 250 blocks - 200 steals had another all-around performance with 14 points, six rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals.

A three time MAC East Player of the Week, Fisher continued his stellar play scoring five straight points to cap off a 12-4 KSU run in the opening four minutes of play. Later in the first half, the Golden Flashes defense took over as they held Buffalo without a field goal for a 7:23 stretch. Led by seven points from Quaintance, Kent State held an 18-4 advantage during the stetch to open up a 37-16 lead before going to the locker room up 41-26.

In the second half after the Bulls cut the deficit down to nine (52-43) when Fisher took over once again scoring five straight points. Sophomore Mike McKee (Plum Borough, Pa. / Plum) completed the 8-0 run with one of his three second half three-pointers as the Golden Flashes quickly extended the lead back to 17 (60-43).

Buffalo continued to fight and pulled to with eight (70-62) with 2:40 remianing before Kent State finshed off the win.

Senior Mike Scott (Indianapolis, Ind. (Northwest) added 13 points to round out the double figure scorers for KSU, which shot over 50.0 percent for a fourth straight game. The Golden Flashes connected on 51.9 percent from the floor, including 8-17 (47.1 percent) from three.

Buffalo was led by 17 points from Andy Robinson and 11 points and 11 rebounds from Calvin Betts. The Bulls shot just 33.3 percent in the first half and 39.0 percent for the game.

Kent State returns to action on Saturday when the team heads west to California to face No. 23 Saint Mary’s in the ESPN BracketBuster. The game is scheduled for an 11:59 pm EST start and will be televised live on ESPN2.

NOTES: Al Fisher has scored in double figures in 11 straight games - the most since Antonio Gates and Eric Haut did so in 2002-03 ... Kent State is a perfect 18-0 when leading at haltime and 21-0 when leading with five minutes left.
