Northeastern Slips By Kent State 61-58 In Cable Car Classic Championship
Golden Flashes erase 12-points first half deficit before falling in the final minute

Release: 12/31/2009

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Kent State (8-5) fell to Northeastern (5-7) by a final of 61-58 in the Championship Game of the 43rd Annual Cable Car Classic on Wednesday night at Santa Clara’s Leavey Center.

After Northeastern’s Matt Janning hit a three-pointer with 1:13 left to break a 56-56 tie, sophomore Justin Greene (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Lincoln) scored inside to pull Kent State to within a single point at 59-58. The KSU defense forced a turnover on the other setting up a chance for the Golden Flashes to take the lead with just 20 seconds remaining. Following a time out, senior Chris Singletary’s (Chicago, Ill. / Florida Prep) contested four-foot jumper slid off the front of the rim and Mathing Muo secured the rebound for the Huskies.

Muo would hit both free throws with eight seconds left to push the lead back to three. KSU had one last chance put a three-point shot by Tyree Evans (Richmond, Va. / Motlow C.C. [Tenn.]) was off the mark.

Greene led the Golden Flashes in scoring for the third consecutive game with 15 points and added seven rebounds and three assists to earn a spot on the all-tournament team. Redshirt junior Rodriquez Sherman (Indianapolis, Ind. / Ben Davis) added 13 points and five rebounds for Kent State which had a three game winning streak snapped with the loss.

After shooting just 3-15 from the field in the opening 10 minutes, Kent State fell behind 17-9. Evans ended the drought with a three from the top of the key and Anthony Simpson (Rockford, Ill./Highland C.C.[Ill.]) followed with an offensive put back, but the shooting struggles would continue. The Golden Flashes trailed by as many as 12 (32-20) before a pair of free throws and an offensive put back of his own that put KSU down eight (32-24) at half time.

The run would stretch into the second half and reach 17-4 when Simpson canned a three from the left wing at the 13:42 mark to give KSU a 37-36 advantage and its first lead since the opening minutes. The game was well contested from there on out with seven more lead changes and five ties and neither team leading by more than three-points.

Kent State recovered from the slow start to shot 54. 5 percent (12-22) in the second half, but still finished the game making just 40.8 percent from the field. Northeastern, which was led by Tournament MVP Janning with 16 points, shot 46.3 percent.

After playing nine of their last 11 away from home, the Golden Flashes return home for their next game on Jan. 4 against Norfolk State.

NOTES:

* Justin Greene was 5-6 from the foul line in the game and is shooting 30-34 (88.2 percent) in the last three games.
* Chris Singletary had three steals for the second straight game and moved into a tie for sixth place with Anthony Grier (1981-85) on the KSU career steals list with 160.
* The game also mark the 100th in Singletary’s career.
* After six different players led the team in scoring the first seven games, Greene as paced the team in five of the last six.
* The loss was the first this season for the Golden Flashes when they have allowed under 70 points (7-1).
