Another Kent State Comeback As Golden Flashes Rally For 74-72 Win Over Western Carolina
Chris Singletary led KSU with nine assists
Courtesy: Kent State Athletic Communications
Release: 02/21/2010

KENT, Ohio – Down six with four minutes left Kent State (20-8) used an 11-0 run to rally past Western Carolina (19-10), 74-72, in an ESPNU BracketBuster contest Saturday night at the M.A.C. Center. The Golden Flashes have now won at least 20 games in 11 of the last 12 years joining a group of just 10 teams in the country to have accomplished the feat.

Sophomore Justin Greene (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lincoln) led KSU with 21 points and nine rebounds. Senior Chris Singletary (Chicago, Ill./Florida Prep) had 11 points and nine assists, while senior Tyree Evans (Richmond, Va./ Motlow C.C. [Tenn.]) had 14 points, with 12 of them coming from three-point shots in the first half. Junior Rodriguez Sherman (Chicago, Ill./Ben Davis) rounded out the KSU players in double figures with 11 points.

Down 62-56 with four minutes remaining, the Golden Flashes used the 11-0 run to seize control of the game. Greene scored the first four points of the stretch, followed by an inside bucket from Singletary that tied the game with 2:38 left to play. The 6’4” senior guard was fouled on the play, but missed the ensuring free throw which was rebounded by Greene. After another KSU miss and offensive rebound, Singletary canned an open three from the corner to give the Golden Flashes the lead for good at 65-62.

“We really improved our intensity in the last four minutes.” said Kent State Head Coach Geno Ford. “Down the stretch, Chris (Singletary) and Justin (Greene) basically were not going to let us lose.”

Sherman would then join in the mix with a steal and breakaway lay-up for a five-point advantage with 2:12 left to cap off the 11-0 stretch.

Ohio native Brigham Waginger ended the Western Carolina drought with a 16-foot jumper, but a tip-dunk by Anthony Simpson (Rockford, Ill./Highland C.C.[Ill.]) and two free throws from Singletary pushed the KSU back to seven with just 51 seconds on the clock. The Catamounts would keep it close with a pair of three-pointers in the final 15 seconds, but the Golden Flashes would hit just enough free throws to secure the win.

Kent State picks up its fifth straight Bracketbuster win, tying the program for the longest winning streak in the nation in the annual event.

The Golden Flashes led by as many as 10 points midway through the first half before taking a 34-33 advantage at the break. Western Carolina came out of halftime with a 10-3 spurt in the first four plus minutes that but them ahead by six (43-37). Kent State regained the lead at 46-45 four minutes later setting up a back-and-forth battle for most of the second half. With the game tied at 56-56, Harouna Mutombo rattled off six straight points to give the Catamounts theier final six point cushion and set the stage for the KSU rally.

The Golden Flashes shot 51.9 percent for the game and scored 36 points in the paint. Richie Gordon led WCU with 16 points.

“We needed a win and I’m glad we won, but this is one, personally, I don’t get too excited about it,” said Ford of the win over his former coach Larry Hunter. “There’s no one on the planet that’s had a bigger influence on my life than Coach Hunter.”

Kent State returns to conference play on Wednesday, February 24th when the team travels to Bowling Green.

NOTES:

* Kent State won its five straight and improves to 6-2 in BracketBuster games
* 11th 20-win season in the last 12 years: One of only 10 teams in the nation
* Singletary becomes the 11th player in school history to reach 300 assists in a career (302)
* Kent State is 11-3 when Chris Singletary leads the team in assists (nine tonight)
* Sixth 20-point game for Justin Greene this season.
* KSU has won 21 straight home games in the month of February
* KSU is 32-5 in February dating back to the 2005-06 season.
* KSU is 20-2 when scoring 62 points or more this year
* KSU has won 14 straight games when scoring at least 30 points in the paint (36 tonight)
* With four three-pointers, Tyree Evans equaled his total from the last four games combined.

From the WCU web site:

Late Run Lifts Kent State over Western Carolina in ESPN BracketBuster, 74-72
Richie Gordon scores 16 points to lead three in double figures
Feb. 20, 2010

Kent, Ohio - With Western Carolina leading by six, 62-56, with four minutes to play, Kent State outscored the Catamounts 15-to-2 over the next three minutes to erase the deficit and take a seven-point lead before surviving an 8-to-3 spurt by WCU in the final minute to score the 74-72 victory Saturday night at the M.A.C. Center.

KSU's Justin Greene scored 21 points and Tyree Evans added 14 points, 13 of which came in the first half. Chris Singletary and Rodriguez Sherman each had 11 for the Golden Flashes (20-8), who have won two games in a row and eight of their past 10 including seven-straight at home.

Trailing 71-64 with 51 seconds to play, the Catamounts' Jake Robinson hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 72-70 with 7 seconds to go. Greene pushed the lead to 74-70 with two free throws before the Catamounts' Richie Gordon closed out the scoring with a layup with two seconds remaining.

Gordon had 16 points, and Brandon Giles and Mike Williams each added 11 for the Catamounts (19-8). Brigham Waginger scored nine points and dished out seven assists, while Jake Robinson and Mike Williams each added nine in the loss.

Western Carolina erased a 10-point first half deficit, chipping away at the Golden Flashes' opening half lead to trail by just one, 34-33, at the break.

WCU returns to Cullowhee for consecutive home games beginning Thursday night at 7:00 pm against Samford before wrapping up the regular season on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm against Chattanooga. The Catamounts will honor their five seniors in a special pre-game ceremony Saturday afternoon in a game that will be televised on SportSouth.

Post-Game Notes:
- Western Carolina and Kent State are even in the all-time series - WCU won in OT at Kent State a year ago with the Golden Flashes evening the series with Saturday night's win;

- Senior Brigham Waginger made two steals in the loss at Kent State giving him 72 on the season, three shy of matching his own WCU single-season record;

- Although WCU played out of conference on Saturday, the Catamounts received good news within league play ... By virtue of Samford's win over Chattanooga -- sweeping the regular season meetings against the Mocs -- Western Carolina was locked into one of the top two positions in the SoCon's North Division, and is guaranteed a first round bye in the upcoming conference tournament;

- The Catamounts still have an outside chance of earning the SoCon's North Division ... To win the division out right, WCU would need to win out (at home against Samford and Chattanooga) and for Appalachian State to lose all of its three remaining contests (at Elon and at home against both Chattanooga and Samford) ... Two Appalachian State losses coupled with two Western Carolina wins would mean the two would share the North Division crown with ASU garnering the top seed after sweeping the regular season ... If ASU wins two or more games OR if WCU drops one, the Mountaineers would win the North outright.
