Whats the deal with the prohibition on 2 or more smileys?

I feel like my constitutional right has been compromised.

seriously, is there a good reason for this? if ya'll think it slows down the site or too much clutter or abuse, or something I understand, just thought I'd ask!

Ok, I did find something that was set at the default of 2. I changed it to 5. Better?
