Default Lottery??? Gambling Help

I have been tryin' to get the wifey off the LOTTERY,
came across this article tonight and hope it could be helpful to others

**************************************************

What is Pathological Gambling?

In 1980, the American Psychiatric Association accepted Pathological (compulsive) Gambling as a "disorder of impulse control". It is an illness that is chronic and progressive but diagnosable and treatable.

Robert L. Custer, M.D. identified the progression of the illness as including three phases:
the winning phase
the losing phase
the desperation phase

During the winning phase , the gambler experiences a big win or series of wins that leaves him/her with unreasonable optimism that his/her winning will continue. This leads him/her to feel much excitement when gambling and he/she begins increasing the amount of his/her bets.

During the losing phase , the gambler often begins bragging about wins they've had, starts gambling alone, thinks more about gambling and borrows money legally or illegally. he/she starts lying to family and friends and becomes more irritable, restless and withdrawn. His/her home life becomes more unhappy and he/she is unable to pay off debts. The gambler begins to "chase" their losses by believing that after losing they must return as soon as possible to win back their losses.

During the desperation phase , there is a marked increase in the time spent gambling accompanied by remorse, blaming others and alienation from family and friends. Eventually the gambler may engage in illegal acts to finance their gambling, and experience hopelessness, suicide thoughts and attempts, arrests, divorce, alcohol and/or other drug abuse, or an emotional breakdown.

A Hidden Disease

Pathological Gambling is often a hidden disease because it is not detectable by only looking at a person. It cannot be detected by a breath or blood test nor does it leave needle marks. Compulsive gamblers hide their lottery tickets, sports picks, etc. from their family, friends and co-workers. Gambling may be a means of escaping from other problems in marriage or at work so it may go unnoticed as a significant problem itself.

Do you have a gambling problem?

Gambler's Anonymous asks its new members twenty questions. Pathological gamblers usually answer yes to at least seven of these questions:

Did you ever lose time from work due to gambling?
Has gambling ever made your home life unhappy?
Did gambling affect your reputation?
Have you ever felt remorse after gambling?
Did you ever gamble to get money in which to pay debts or otherwise solve financial difficulties?
Did gambling cause a decrease in your ambition or efficiency?
After losing, did you feel you must return as soon as possible to win back your losses?
After a win, did you have a strong urge to return and win more?
Did you often gamble until your last dollar was gone?
Did you ever borrow to finance your gambling?
Have you ever sold anything to finance your gambling?
Were you reluctant to use "gambling money" for normal expenditures?
Did gambling make you careless of the welfare of yourself and your family?
Did you ever gamble longer than you planned?
Have you ever gambled to escape worry or trouble?
Have you ever committed, or considered committing an illegal act to finance gambling?
Did gambling cause you to have difficulty in sleeping?
Do arguments, disappointments or frustrations create within you an urge to gamble?
Have you ever considered self-destruction as a result of your gambling?

Who is Affected?

Pathological gambling affects the gambler, their family, their employer and the community. As the gambler goes through the phases of their addiction as mentioned above, they spend less time with their family, spend more of the family's money on gambling until their bank accounts are depleted and then may steal money from family members.

At work, the pathological gambler misuses time in order to gamble, has difficulty concentrating and finishing projects, may show abnormal mood swings and may engage in embezzlement, employee theft, or other illegal activities.

I think we had this discussion at the "old place". I never play the lottery, and the only time I do scratch offs is if someone gets them for me as a present.

Default Lottery = Bad Math Tax

The lottery is nothing more than a tax on people that failed basic math in grade school.

Put in $1, get out 50 cents. Hmmm.... makes even a bad handicapper look like Warren Buffet.

It is the chief reason why the government hates online gambling ... cheifly being that they don't like competition.

Do you follow a strict bankroll management system when gambling?? If you do explain that to her and tell her that she can play but also has to adhere to a strict bankroll management system. If she agrees she'll get tired of betting the lottery in a few weeks.

Oh yeah , i started that thread . I was basically just asking "what games people play" and if anybody has ever hit it big on the lottery.

I personally play the lottery "for fun"

I'm not worried about the "risk vs reward" factor involved one bit ..

If i make a trip to the grocery store or to a convenience store i usually will play 2-5 dollars ... I actually hit the daily about 2 months ago .. Was watching the number come out too that night. PRETTY EXCITING ..

I do not believe in playing 20-40 dollars a day and i do believe that is extremely silly.

I usually play : Cash 5, Mix and Match, and this new game PA LOTTERY has out called Treasure Hunt where the drawing is online everyday (midday drawing)..

Good Luck Homedawg

Thanks guys

I printed the article(keep it close to her everyday) and showed her this thread after I wrote it, and she has since gone "cold turkey".... I do not have a problem with anyone playin' the lottery, but when it gets to be an everyday losing affair, it is just wrong. I tell her to lay a couple bucks on the Super Lotto, and thats it. If she could win that, then she might be ahead (after many years of playing the lottery)

The problem is, she makes a trip to the grocery, convenience, gas station, or any store EVERYDAY. She will even make an excuse to go to the store(for the kids, cats, dogs, or something)...
It is different here with the wifey, I have estimated somewhere between $6,000.00-$10,000.00, she has spent on the lottery, in the last year alone....

BeerMan, Yes I do!
I have tried that with her, but it wasn't working....

I even opened up an online account for her, to start betting on sports, She went and played the sportsbook casino and lost $100.00 in 15 minutes.

This is the best way to put the lottery on top of all else that was said(im talking scratch offs).

its the only game where you can but $50.00 worth of tickets, win what you do and keep buying. usually will end being the only game where you bet 50.00, win 200.00 and end up with jack **** LOL!

with that being said i do buy 2 tickets per week for the lotto jackpots, but i never do scratch offs.

Scratch offs have the worst odds also....on the back of them in Ohio they list the odds of winning. However, that doesn't say what the odds of winning each prize is. Ask the retailer if you can see that sheet, they all get one. I asked a store owner to see on that had 1:4 odds of winning....the odds of winning a $50 prize were 1:5700, but of course the odds of winning a dollar or a free ticket is a heckuva lot higher like the 1:4. And what do you do with that free ticket or the $1, you roll it right back over......it's better to play the pick 3....better odds of winning and better money!

My mom was addicted to those scratch offs.....now we have her just taking day trips with us to Mountaineer Race Track and Gaming Resort every couple of months. She takes $50-100 bucks and plays the quarter slots.....and most of the time she comes home a winner or with at least half of her money left and fun time to show for it....

Mountaineer has gotten better over the years. I have heard more and more people talking about WINNING down there lately. I think they TIGHTENED UP the jackpots when they built the new hotel a few years back and they have slowly LOOSENED em up over the the last year or so ...

Fun going down there on a Saturday night and sitting outside on the patio and watching live racing.

I hate scratchoffs .. I only play 3-digit,and the jackpot games like Cash 5 or Treasure Hunt. Every once in a while i'll box a 4 digit

Exactly!

the mindset is, if I have $10.00 to lose on the lottery, and go and buy 10- $1 tickets, If I end up a ahead, I go and buy more, etc.....

Wait a minute, If you are ahead of your investment, then take the money and run!

Betting on sports, you have a 50/50 chance at every game, so when you win, go to another game and you have the 50/50 chance again.

The lottery tickets as JP pointed out has a 1 in 4(minimum) chance of winning, and when you win, at least the next 3 tickets will lose!

Take your winnings and go!

Do ya feel lucky? Then buy 4 lottery tickets, and leave it at that. Cash out your winnings and stop!

Same applys to me, betting on sports (and with much better odds) I maximize the risk I will make on any given day! (based on my last 7days return)

Where the wifey made a turn to the worst, when she started losing $10.00 on the lottery and would invest another $10.00 at the same time, and then start with a $20.00 and go in with another $20.00 etc...

Bottom line is, She is so far in debt to the lottery, she would need to win the SUPER LOTTO, to get back ahead...

the wifey cut back bigtime, since my last post!
yesterday she spent $1.00 on the megamillions (Estimated Jackpot: $63 million)
.... she ended up with 4 outta 5 (missed 1 number by 1: it was 51 she had 50) and got the mega ball... result: $10,000.00

still not enough to pay for her losses, and now she is probably, going to go back to, $20.00 per day...
