Default Mattingly gets dicked, Girardi to get offered Yanks managerial job

Im no baseball manager genius, but I find it hard to believe Donnie Baseball didn't get a shot to manage the Yanks.

So much for loyalty.

has mattingly ever managed before at any level? i don't follow baseball all that closely. i wouldn't hire a guy without managing experience, though (not sure if mattingly managed before as i said, though).

i think they went with the proven quantity, IMO. he reportedly turned down interviews in Cincinnati and also the Baltimore job. I think this was kind of set for a while that if torre left he would get the job.

Im not sure if its gonna work out with Girardi. Not sure if him managing his former teammates is the best thing for the team. They brought Mattingly in to be the next manager after Torre left and basically they screwed him like they screwed Torre. Now they will have no ARod next year and no right handed hitter than can hit for power. Their offense will be in the middle of the pack next year while their pitching will remain unproven.

Yanks will finish 2nd or 3rd battling it out with Toronto.

Mattingly has NEVER managed anywhere on any level in his entire life.

He will follow Torre to the Dodgers now it's being reported. Hopefully, Rivera and Posada go with them.

Wait til Joba blows out his arm in spring training too, this is great!!!!!

one thing about experience:

Girardi - One year managing (won NL Manager of the year)
Mattingly - never managed before but had never been given a shot

girardi has only coached one year of baseball in his lifetime. who's to say that mattingly wouldn't win coach of the year honors in his first season.

looks like donny ballgame is going to the LAD with Torre......

you have to laugh at the Yankees....they screw over one of their own who was the face of the franchise in the 80's....then bitch about A-Rod not wanting to be a Yankee and they are all bent out of shape over it........is HYPOCRISY a triple word score???.....

The Yankees need a rebuild. They were going nowhere fast with what they had. Maybe they need to ditch some of the players they had. There is no player loyalty what so ever towards any team....it's all about the green....so why should an organization be criticized when they don't show "loyalty" towards their employees.

Now while I don't agree with the way they treat SOME of their guys, some of them are just at the point where they're just not worth their salary anymore. At the same time, Girardi had proven, even if it was only for one year, what he could do with young talent.

I think that's the direction the Yankees need to head in, and therefore may have hired the right man for the job if, and that's a big if, his results in Florida (who went back to being pretty bad after he left with alot of the same players) are any indication.

Maybe the Yanks have actually done something smart for a change. Only time will tell.

Girardi did a brilliant job with the young Marlins team. The Marlins were in the race till late when there inexperience finally took over. I just wanted to point out that the whole experience factor in making the decision on who to be manager was way overblown. It would be different if you had a choice between Jim Leyland or Don Mattingly then I could understand the whole experience thing. I do agree with the choice in the Yanks choosing Girardi and I think ARod deciding not to comeback is a good thing for the Yanks. With Girardi in the helm it looks like the Yanks will try and get back to the days of 96-00 where they had a hard-nosed gritty team. Also worth mentioning and I think this is a big deal is that Hal and Hank won't be like George. They are not going to spend all there money on big name players. There starting to realize you don't need to spend $250 million to win. I think you'll the Yankees payroll be sizably reduced over the next 2-3 years. Aiding to that obviously will be the influx of young players like Jhoba, Hughes, Cano, Kennedy..etc.

got to credit girardi for parlaying 1 great year into manager of the yankees.... problem for the yankees is that 1 year could very well have been a fluke... not saying it was, but you never know

What's funny is that Girardi is getting a 3 yr deal around 7 million dollars while Terry Francona will be making just 1.7 million next season. Gotta love it! 1 yr manager gets about 1.3 million while a manager who's won 2 world series in just 4 yrs gets 1.7 hahaahaha

Girardi is getting paid more than 1.3...More like 2.3

Francona will probably get a new contract...He has too

They didn't screw over Mattingly at all. He even said himself he was never promised the job after Torre was gone. Also, word here is that Girardi absolutely blew the Yankee brass away in his interview with his plan for the future and what direction the team should go in having specific things for all the young kids and the team as a whole. Mattingly obviously did not impress them nearly as much.

Sadly for us Yankee haters, they made the second best choice (Torre being the first).

Agreed, Francona will definitely get a new deal probably for $3 million plus I would guess.
