Cool JoePa's Wednesday April 9th Bases

I usually like the season to get a little further along before I get my feet wet, but I'm already going thru withdrawals since CBB is over. I'l ask The Mitt for a pick when I through administering a test!

Good luck JoePa. I do have one observation. Judging from some of the recent graduates I have had contact with the last few years, many more of them should have flunked out.
I am even more amazed at the number of college graduates who seem incapable of putting together a coherent sentence. The cost of higher education keep rising while the results keep declining.

The problem is....the high schools are not doing their job! In 2013 in Ohio, the state will not give colleges subsidy for students enrolled in "developmental" coursework (less than college level). This past fall shows that of 798 new freshman tested in the Fall of 2007, 95% of them needed remediation in math, 60% in English, and 40% in reading! Unfreaking believable! We have to teach them multiplication tables, fractions, etc.....what the heavens name did they do in Algebra I and II in high school? Hate to say it, but we can't "dumb down" the courses to nothing because then a degree would mean absolutely nothing! Pay your money and I'll give you a diploma!

Well, I liked the Tony Bennett rumors.... His wife is from Baton Rouge and her parents and family still live here, so I have a feeling the rumors had more to do with that serious interest on his end. I liked his style of play and defensive toughness though.

As for Johnson, I really don't know much about him besides what I saw from Stanford this season. The key for any LSU coach heavily involves recruiting. D.J. Augustin, Shan Foster, and Greg Monroe (very highly ranked recruit this year, #1 some places) are all from Louisiana and left to play out of state. There is enough talent here to win, LSU just needs a coach that can convince guys to stay and build from there. Seems like the team wasn't happy with Brady, especially considering they won several games right after his firing. I just don't have much info on Johnson, but I can't really complain since the majority of what I do know about him is positive. Oh, and losing Anthony Randolph stinks...lol.....

GL on your plays. Wish I had the stones to back KC and Greinke tonight, because I like the play.

My daughter is in 3rd grade and has started multiplication and division. Multiplication to 10 and division to 10. She knows fractions already. She is in Ohio. Is this because she is in a private school (catholic)? I feel like she is learning the stuff I learned in 5th grade in 3rd grade. I am amazed as to what she is learning at this early age.

They have about "dumbed-down" the courses as much as they can. And spending $7,000 to $10,000 per high school student per year, depending on your state, should be more then adequate. I think the biggest problem is parents. They just don't seem to give a damn. And way to many homes only have one parent. There is very little supervision and oversight by parents. These kids are not stuoid. They just are not "motivated." My father was a master-motivator. And both my parents would help me with my homework, if needed. And they got progress reports between report cards. And there would be hell to pay if I did not perform to my capabilites. There is very little of that anymore. And another reason is that some parents are not very well educated themselves. But they still could let the child know that failure was not acceptable. I think many parents just take the attitude that all they want to do is get the kid through school and the hell with results. And no amount of money will change that. It is really sad.

But your sweep cheers me up. Congrats JoePa. And I have no doubt if Baltimore had not been rained out, you would have won that one also.

You can take her results in school to the bank because she's in a private school!
My kids are all enrolled in private schools and my oldest has a 3.96GPA but also a 28ACT to go along with it, while my second eldest has a 4.0 and a 30ACT.....my son is in jr. high and has yet to take the ACT and they don't carry GPAs but his track record is also very solid.

We can see differences in public school districts but the privates are very strong....overall retention rates for all students attending college is on average 56%...which means 44% can't make it because they are under-prepared, etc. The average success rate should be much higher than that and Ohio ranks in the bottom 5 of states with college educated adults. No jobs here so they leave!

I think we could all benefit from privatization of schools which would spur competition for state and federal money by student success rates! And, I think Canada has it right, let me tell you which school district I want my tax money sent too....the one my kids go to and the most successful ones.....private or public! The competition for students goes up and schools ramp up their academics......
