Using their run defense to go against Buffalo is getting a bit old, isn't it? I've heard this story over and over like a broken record, and it's clearly not working. Buffalo is 4-2 ATS last 6, and those games have been against some of the best rushing teams in the NFL.
Crudely capping, NYJ are the 2nd ranked rushing offense in the NFL, yes, but they are also the 4th last passing offense, averaging a putrid 163 yards per game. Tennessee is first in rushing, and the Bills hung with them until their 4th Q collapse. Then Miami is 3rd, even though I do agree a legit argument could be made that Miami is no longer the 3rd best rushing team in the NFL without Ronnie Brown, and they didn't obliterate the Bills last week, as a matter of fact, the Bills won outright. Then there's Carolina, who is 4th, whom the Bills beat 20-9 at Carolina a few weeks back. 5th is New Orleans, another Bills opponent, and one who actually has a passing game to compliment that run, unlike these other teams....and one whom the Bills played tough for the whole game until another 4Q collapse. Jacksonville is 8th, another team Buffalo hung with on the road. What does this show? 2 things to me... 1. Buffalo has played some pretty damn good rushing teams, and therefore, while I am by no means saying they have a great rush defense, their defensive rushing numbers are skewed. 2. Moving the ball is onlt half the battle. While teams are able to rush on them, they are not scoring a ton of points. You can run all day between the 20's, but if you don't punch it in, it's not a hell of alot of use. It has never been mentioned here that the Bills have been a completely different team with Perry Fewell stepping in as coach and Fitzpatrick assuming the QB role. Mr Rogers conservative style wasn't cutting it, and the players really seem to be responding to Fewell. But that doesn't matter.....i guess. It's always just as easy as taking the "better ranked team", isn't it? Also not mentioned is that the Jets suck as bad or probably worse than the Bills, yet they are a road fave. Jets are 2-6 in their last 8, with wins over Oakland and Carolina. Big woo. Yet people are talking about them as a playoff team? Huh? What? In what league? And still talking about their defense as being great. They imo are probably headed in the exact opposite direction from the Bills right now, having a disappointing season, having not lived up to their lofty expectations....and probably with no real light at the end of the tunnel for this season. Oh, and I am guessing this is NOT a neutral site. For that to be true, i would think that both teams have to receive relatively the same fan backing at said site. I'm guessing that won't be the case just over the border from Buffalo in Toronto tonight. Mr Lang, IF you are going to take the Jets here, the proper reasoning (IMHO) would be the poor play of the inexperienced, injured, and undertalented Bills offensive line vs a blitzing Jets defense, because if the Bills lose this game, it will be because that line is overwhelmed, they can't run the ball, and Fitzpatrick has no time to throw. Like always, I feel slightly stupider every time I read this guy's column LOL |

He has been getting alot right lately. Some had (imho) sound reasoning too. This reasoning was retarded (again, that's just my opinion)....I mean it's not like the entire world doesn't know Buffalo has struggled vs the run, including those stupid guys who make the odds. You can only beat a dead horse so many times, but his play won, so good for him.
The Jets won/covered last night, but in all honesty, I don't know that they win that game and cover the -3 (or -3.5 closer to game time) more than 52% of the time, and I would still bet the Bills given the same chance again. |
