  • JoePa's HP BYRON NELSON Picks

Nice to have a winner again last week, as Chris Kirk was a straight up winner even though I picked him for a Top 5 finish. Distance will be a big key this week with the Dallas area taking on lots of water and no roll on the course. It should be steamy with a chance of some more rain and temps in the 80s.

BRANDT SNEDEKER 22/1 OUTRIGHT WIN & 9/2 TOP 5 FINISH - Sneds came out of no where last week he shot four sub 70 rounds and finished T2nd last week at Colonial. Even though he had the putter working beautifully last week, He did miss a couple of putts, including one on 18 that could have propelled him into a playoff with eventual winner Chris Kirk. His finish in Fort Worth was his best finish of the season since winning at Pebble Beach earlier in the season.

IAN POULTER / WITHDREW ON WEDNESDAY AFTER MY POST-

GARY WOODLAND 6/1 TOP 5 FINISH - Runnerup finish at the Cadillac Match Play and T4th at Quail Hollow. He likes this course and has collected five straight pay checks at TPC Four Seasons where he finished a personal-best T7th in 2014!

JUSTIN THOMAS 6/1 TOP 5 FINISH - Second week in a row that I have backed a player making a debut in a Texas tournament! Again, not usually to my liking, but, Thomas comes to Big 'D' in great form with Top 25s in his last four Tour starts the best being a T7th at Quail Hollow. His string of finishes also includes T24th at The Players, T12th at the Zurich and T11th at the RBC Heritage. Nine of his last 12 rounds have been in he 60s! He's 7th in driving distance, 2nd in par 5 scoring, 8th in putting average and 9th in birdie average.

JONH HUH 14/1 TOP 5 FINISH - Simply like his ability to drive the ball deep off the tee and that he finished with 8 birdies on Sunday at Colonial where he finished T18th with a final round 64. He placed 8th here in 2013 and T16th in 2014. Currently ranks 23rd in strokes gained putting.

Jason Day, Ian Poulter back out of rain-soaked Byron Nelson
12 players pull out of Byron Nelson for myriad reasons

Almost 10 percent of the original field for this week's AT&T Byron Nelson Championship has withdrawn ahead of the Thursday opener. A total of 12 players have pulled out for myriad reasons.

Ian Poulter withdrew on Wednesday morning, citing on Twitter a "strain" he suffered in a gym workout. This was to be Poulter's final PGA Tour event of that season that wasn't a major, World Golf Championships or FedEx Cup playoffs event.

Past Nelson champion Jason Day withdrew when he experienced some dizziness on the host TPC Four Seasons course.

Kevin Kisner, who has finished runner-up twice this season via playoff losses, pulled out earlier in the week.

In addition, 2010 Open champion Louis Oosthuizen, 2015 Puerto Rico Open winner Alex Cejka, Scott Gardiner, Fredrik Jacobson, Jason Kokrak, Neal Lancaster, George McNeill, Chris Stroud and Will Zalatoris have withdrawn. That meant the likes of Ben Curtis and Trevor Immelman, both major champions, got in off the alternate list. However, former PGA Tour winner Tommy Gainey turned down a chance to play in the field when a spot opened for him, deciding to remain in the Web.com Tour event this week instead.

For some, injuries and health issues were a factor. For others, no doubt the state of TPC Four Seasons was a problem, with the course already drenched from rains pounding many areas of Texas. More rain is expected throughout tournament week.
