For some, the PGA Tour season ends with the final Major of the year but for others, the season is reaching its peak as just one event remains before the FedExCup Playoffs. Greensboro, NC and Sedgefield CC host the players this week for the 2011 Wyndham Championship and all in attendance are looking to either earn a spot in the field for the first playoff event or improve their chances of making it to the following weeks. We all know that Tiger Woods is not participating and will not make the top-125 but several other big name are in need of a good finish to make sure they are not left out. Ernie Els and Justin Leonard are currently on the outside looking in and others like Camilo Villegas and Davis Love III need strong performances to not get ousted here in the final week. The Golf Channel has all the early round coverage with CBS picking up the weekend broadcasts.

Sedgefield CC will provide and exciting finish to the PGA regular season as the 7,130 yard, par-70 course ranked as the 7th easiest in the Tour’s 2010 rotation. The course does not play long but accuracy is off the tee and into the green is rewarded with the best birdie looks. Missed greens will give the players a tough test to get up and down as fall-off areas lead to tough pitch and chip opportunities to very undulating putting surfaces. Good scores will be shot by most and it will probably take one great round to keep in contention as was the case with Arjun Atwal’s course record 61 during the first round last year. Sedgefield gave up the 2nd most birdies and eagles last year so there is almost no chance of this one not being a shootout.

Short Favorite: David Toms (12 to 1 odds to win)

The consensus favorite earns that nod with a win already on his 2011 resume along with a strong showing at the PGA Championship and a runner-up finish at this event last year. Toms is 4th on Tour in fairways hit and is 2nd in GIR% to produce top-10 ranks in both birdie and scoring average. A 7th ranked total putting mark rounds out the 2nd best all around stat sheet and David can play comfortably as his spot in the FedEx race is secure.

Middle of the Road: Jim Furyk (28 to 1 odds to win)

The veteran has had a quiet year with just two top-10 finishes and seven missed cuts but Sedgefield is the type of course that he can eat up. Furyk is currently 70th in FedEx points and a good week would go a long way to getting him closer to the Championship week so expect motivation to be high this week. Still among the best with the iron game, Furyk brings 2nd best par-3 performance into the week and not too many can bring the experience factor that he does.

Longshot: Jerry Kelly (80 to 1 odds to win)

Kelly couldn’t quite keep it together after coming out the gates hot at the PGA Championship, but you have to like the way he played overall and that should spill over to a course that he’s had success before. Jerry was T9 at the 2008 Wyndham and his 7th best fairways hit percentage set up perfect for Sedgefield. Kelly is another that could use a boost to improve his chances of making it further into the playoffs and this event has been very kind to the journeymen on Tour over the last few years. If he does miss the greens, Kelly is top-20 in scrambling and that should help him keep with scoring pace.

Bill Haas (-120) v. Brandt Snedeker (-110) (our pick to win: Haas)

Snedeker can make any match close with one of the best putting strokes on Tour but Haas gets the win here with a much better greens hit percentage and a 3rd best overall ballstriking mark. Haas is also quite a bit longer and hits about the same amount of fairways as Snedeker so the scoring clubs will be out a bit more.

Pat Perez (-115) v. Chad Campbell (-115) (our pick to win: Perez)

Anyone who follows the Bob Hope event knows that Pat Perez is at his best when the scores are low. Campbell hits more greens and is a better overall ballstriker but Perez is the much better putter and is 19th in birdie average with Cambell outside of the top-125.
