2008 Kentucky Derby Entries, Post Positions, Morning Line Odds and Overlays

2008 Kentucky Derby favorite Big Brown (3-1) overcame post 12 to win the Florida Derby but he’ll have to overcome much more than that to win the 134th Kentucky Derby – he’ll be breaking from post 20 this time against much tougher competition.
Big Brown will have to use some speed early to gain position, which he can do – but will he have enough left in the drive to hold off Colonel John (4-1), who should get a decent trip from post 10? While horses have won the Kentucky Derby from wide posts, no horse has ever done it from a post this wide. Big Brown will also have to deal with fit and game California speedsters Gayego (15-1) in post 19 and Bob Black Jack (20-1) in post 13.
Third choice on the morning line, Pyro (6-1) drew post 9. The lone filly entered for the race, Eight Belles (20-1), drew post 5. She was also entered in the Kentucky Oaks, where she drew post 12. Her chances in the Oaks would be much better.
The 10th race on the Saturday. May 3, Churchill Downs card, the Kentucky Derby is slated to be run at 6:04 p.m. EST.
