2008 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Preview and Picks
It's hard to believe we'll get 7/2 on Laragh after her dominating wire-to-wire win in the Jessamine at Keeneland two weeks ago but that's what she's listed at on the morning line. She looks like the dominant inside speed on a turf course that has been favoring speed, and she gets top turf rider Prado. C Karma appears to be the only other filly in here that can stay close to Laragh early if that one guns for the lead, and while that filly has beaten her twice, Laragh may have had excuses. C Karma had already started once before defeating Laragh in her first lifetime start. And when she beat Laragh in the Natalma at Woodbine the turf was soft.
While C Karma could win this race, we're thinking Laragh had legitimate excuses when she lost to that one and we expect a big race from her on Friday. Renda comes into the race off two dominating stakes wins on the dirt but we wonder who she's been beating up on and she's never run on the turf. We would rather go with a proven Breeders' Cup winning trainer like "Shug" McGaughey, who will saddle Consequence at a nice price. Consequence's wide third place finish over a yielding Belmont turf course in the Miss Grillo three weeks ago can be excused, and she might be improving at just the right time.
Sugar Mom is another improving and intriguing longshot trying turf for the first time after winning three straight for sharp trainer Wayne Catalano. We'll be using her on exotic tickets along with California Cup Juvenile winner Saucey Evening, a closer who broke her maiden on the grass.
