Jake Peavy’s foot injury puts him on DL, off the trade market
by Badger of Predictem.com
The San Diego Padres and ace Jake Peavy finally came clean with everyone on Saturday, when the Padres placed the right-hander on the 15-day disabled list with a strained tendon in his foot.
But don’t be fooled by the 15-day window, Peavy will be out past the All-Star Game July 15th at least, and with setbacks well past the July 31st trading deadline.
Peavy, who originally hurt his ankle trying to score in a game back on May 22nd, has been trying to gut his way through his last few starts and many observers could tell something was wrong. Putting him on the DL became a reality when MRI’s determined he could do further damage to it by trying to gut it some more.
He has been officially diagnosed as having a strain of the posterior tibialis, the muscle that starts under the tibia and runs behind the ankle and ends at the navicular, the main bone in the arch of the foot, was originally given a best-case scenario of one month recovery time for Peavy. But even Padres trainer Todd Hutcheson admitted already its looking more like eight to 12 weeks because of the importance to “do the right thing” for Peavy’s career.
In other words, don’t expect the Padres to rush Peavy back just so he can make a few starts before the July 31st deadline.
Peavy originally never even told the Padres training staff about the injury, it was the next day after when the pain didn’t go away that Peavy was concerned he hurt his Achilles tendon. Since there was some tearing in the muscle and tendon Peavy is already in a hard cast for two weeks, after which time they will re-evaluate and either move to a walking boot (good progress) or leave it in another hard cast (slow progress).
Talk about karma, Peavy hurt his foot on the same day he officially rejected the trade offer from the Chicago White Sox. If that’s coincidence, or the baseball gods keeping him in his place I’ll let you decide.
