UFC News and Notes (7/13)
Digesting UFC 148... There seems to be a fair amount of open speculation surrounding the main event combatants from last weekend as several scenarios are floating around about the futures of Anderson Silva, Chael Sonnen and the Middleweight Division itself.
It won't mean much since there is no suspension forthcoming but the Nevada State Athletic Commission did warn Anderson Silva about his shoulder shove at the UFC 148 weigh-ins. The move was out of character for the champion but he will have to be on his best behavior for a while, just in case.
At 37, Silva could decide at any point that he has had enough of the Ocatgon but it seems unlikely that he would announce a retirement in the immediate future, especially since he is mostly healthy for a fighter of his years. There has to be some motivation to retire and vacate the belt versus losing it but it seems probable that Silva would get an almost automatic rematch should he lose, so there is really no scenario that has the Spider in the cage and not fighting for the belt.
Sonnen said that he would leave the UFC if he couldn't best Silva but that was all for promotional purposes. The problem for the 35 year old comes in getting another title shot since there will be little fan support to see Silva v. Sonnen III after two losses in two years. While some other 185-pounders take their shot, Chael has hinted at a move up to 205lbs. Sonnen entered the UFC as a light heavyweight and he could always come back to middleweight if Silva retires or if there is no better contender.
Speaking of contenders… Chris Weidman asserted himself as a potential suitor for the middleweight crown after a knockout win against Mark Munoz on Fuel TV. Weidman, now 9-0, is about as hot as anyone in the division and promises a tough test for Silva if given a full training camp. Mark Munoz drops to 12-3 and faces a 180 day medical suspension with 30 days of no contact after a vicious elbow ended his night. As always, fighters can be cleared by medical professionals and not serve the full medical suspension.
Evans wants in, too… Rashad Evans is planning a practice cut to 185 pounds in order to see if he can win a title shot against Anderson Silva. "Suga" has fought at heavyweight already, so dropping another class would be difficult to do while maintaining his strength but he may have a better shot at getting a middleweight title match than another at light heavyweight.
Te Huna wins, but probably doesn't feel like it… The Fuel TV battle between David Te Huna and Joey Beltran was so much of a war that the winner emerged in rougher shape than the loser. Te Huna got the W but received arm and foot fractures that will keep him on the shelf for a while (180 day medical) with the loser Beltran getting a 60 day breather after absorbing nearly 200 blows. This was great fight that deserves consideration for fight of the year so far.
A fight I want to see… Shane Carwin and Roy "Big Country" Nelson have been tabbed as coaches for season 16 of The Ultimate Fighter. Carwin (12-2) and Nelson (17-7) have been trading jabs on Twitter for a while now so they have the requisite dislike for each other that makes for good reality show material as well as a good fight. Both heavyweights are looking to take a step up in the division and both are among the best one punch knockout artists on the UFC roster. I can't imagine this matchup going down any other way than with an all-out, toe-to-toe slugfest. Let's hope there are no injuries or other circumstances that keep these two from squaring off in the TUF finale.
UFC 148: Forrest Griffin takes on a struggling Tito Ortiz and Anderson Silva brings his nasty 29-4 record into Vegas against Chael Sonnen. Check out Evergreen's analysis on this event here: UFC 148 Picks. - 7/7
