Sunday’s game between the 49ers and the Rams will not be any kind of playoff preview or hardcore rivalry matchup but it will mean something to the guys on the field. For The San Francisco 49ers it will be an opportunity to avoid a seventh consecutive losing system and potentially finish at .500 for the season. The Rams on the other hand will look forward to finishing the season perhaps in a position to get the No. 1 draft pick for next year’s season. That might not be what the Rams set out to do earlier this year but the reality is evident- they need some fresh blood, and a stand out rookie would be more than welcome on the roster.
Last week the 49ers got off to very slow start against the Detroit Lions but thanks to a couple of third quarter touchdowns San Francisco managed to pull away from the cats and earn their seventh win on the season. Niner’s running back Frank Gore scored on a 1-yard TD run and Alex Smith threw a touchdown pass to Vernon Davis giving San Fran both of their TDs. The Lions helped a ton by turning the ball over six times in the 20-6 loss.
St. Louis comes into this week’s game averaging just 11 points per game and 290 yards of total offense. The Rams gain 177 yards in passing and 113 yards in rushing. Defensively, the Rams allow 27.2 points per game to their opponents. They give up a total of 375 yards offense with 237 through the air and 138 on the ground.
San Francisco enters this contest averaging 20.1 points per game and 288 yards of total offense. They average 189 yards in passing and 98 on the ground attack. Defensively, the Niners allow 18 points per game and 340 yards of total offense to the opposition. San Fran allows 243 yards passing and 97.7 yards rushing per contest.
The 49ers are 1-6 SU, 4-2-1 ATS, and 3-4 O/U on the road this season.
The Rams are 0-7 SU, 3-4 ATS, and 5-2 O/U at home this season.
San Francisco has won the last three matchups between these two teams by a combined score of 87-32. The Rams are suffering from a ton of injuries and a lack of leadership as each week it seems like there are new guys on the field for St. Louis.
The Niners have won three out of their last five games while the Rams have 0-5 in their last five contests. In fact, the Rams only win this season was on November 1 at Detroit 17-10. St. Louis is truly having a season to forget as they seem to get into more of a hole each week especially with all the injuries, but on the bright side at least they have guys getting some experience albeit a pounding by other teams. Either way, the Rams have not been too effective offensively as they have scored 17 or less in six consecutive games.
