Over/Under Total: OFF
The Arizona Cardinals and Philadelphia Eagles are two underachieving teams looking to get back on the right track. The Eagles were temporarily on the right track with two straight wins over the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys, but a Monday Night setback to the Chicago Bears leave the Eagles at 3-5, tied for last place in the NFC East, and out of the NFC playoff picture. The Cardinals, who lost six games in a row after starting the season with a Week 1 win over the Carolina Panthers, finally got back on the winning side with a 19-13 win over the St. Louis Rams in overtime.
The Cardinals earned a memorable victory on Sunday. With the game tied at 13 in overtime, rookie cornerback Patrick Peterson returned a punt 99 yards for a touchdown to win the game for the Cardinals. The Eagles, on the other hand, had a memorable loss. Up 24-17, they allowed the Bears to finish the game on a 13-0 run to win it.
The Cardinals are 0-4 on the road this season with losses to the Redskins, Seahawks, Vikings and Ravens. Down five games in the NFC West to the 49ers, their season is more or less over already, despite still having eight games remaining. The Cardinals have been quite the disappointment this season. Quarterback Kevin Kolb has been underwhelming with 1,706 passing yards, eight passing touchdowns and eight interceptions in seven games. He sat out in the win over the Rams last week with a toe injury and his status for the Eagles game is questionable. Running back Beanie Wells has been pretty solid with 526 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns in seven games. All-Pro wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald leads the team with 38 receptions, 646 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns.
Four of the Eagles' five losses this season have come by a touchdown or less. Their lone loss by more than seven points was a 29-16 loss to the Giants at home. Quarterback Michael Vick has 2,065 passing yards, 11 passing touchdowns, nine interceptions, 456 rushing yards, eight fumbles, and three lost fumbles. It has not been a great season for Vick, who has been erratic and turnover prone. The team MVP has been running back LeSean McCoy, who has 824 rushing yards, nine rushing touchdowns, 28 receptions, 184 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns. McCoy has been spectacular, and frankly the Eagles would be smart to get him the ball as much as possible. Leading the receiving core is Jeremy Maclin, who has 44 receptions for 606 yards and four touchdowns.
The Eagles, who entered the season with extremely high expectations, are clearly in a must win situation against the Cardinals. There is no more lee-way. They are at home against a 2-6 team and are coming off a tough loss. The Eagles need to win this game to have any chance of making the playoffs. The Cardinals' season, as mentioned above, is already basically over. They will hold out any injured players and play with no pressure. That could be a good or bad thing for the Eagles, who certainly are playing with a ton of pressure.
The Eagles have struggled this season stopping the run, but stopping Wells will be a priority in this game. If they can focus on Wells and their terrific cornerbacks, Nnamdi Asomugha and Asante Samuel, can contain Fitzgerald, then the Eagles should be able to score plenty enough points to win the game. Against this mediocre Cardinals defense, there is no reason the Eagles shouldn't score at least 30 points. It's just a matter of how well the Eagles' defense performs.
The Cardinals are 4-11 ATS in their last 15 road games. The Eagles are 6-1-1 ATS in their last eight Sunday games after a Monday night game. The Eagles are 1-6 ATS in their last seven home games and 0-4 ATS in their last four games against teams with a losing record. The over is 4-0 in the last four meetings between these teams. The home team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings between these teams.
Ryno's Pick to Cover the Point Spread: While there is no betting line out for this game yet, I can confidently say that I'm comfortable laying as many as -14 points with the Eagles. I really believe the Cardinals are in a REAL bad spot here and are going to get absolutely crushed. Good luck!
