Week Six features yet another inter-conference collision between the AFC North’s Baltimore Ravens and the NFC East’s New York Giants at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey with a 1:00 PM scheduled kick-off. The game is set to be aired on FOX in selected regional markets. Both teams enter on two game skids. For Baltimore the list of losses include both Oakland and Washington at home at M&T Bank Stadium. For New York, they were assailed by the cream of the crop in the NFC North, as they fell in back-to-back outings against both the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers on the road.
This market has a been a bit of a conundrum. Initially, the heat was on the Ravens but that has since cooled off and shifted gear towards the Giants. The Ravens perhaps have the lesser convincing resume of the two outfits as Baltimore has lost two games at home in back-to-back affairs while taking advantage of poor offensive performances. The Giants were tasked with facing a prime defense in Minnesota followed by a strong offensive unit that they could not outgun in Green Bay in notoriously hostile environments. The G-Men own wins over New Orleans and Dallas on the year. For Baltimore, the list of foes dispatched include Buffalo, Cleveland and Jacksonville by a combined margin of 13 points.
The Ravens are not an impressive team by the least. Perhaps their best player on offense is “60 Minutes” Mike Wallace yet still Baltimore has much need for improvement. The most this team could muster up is 25 points against Cleveland and Cleveland’s defense for lack of a better term is horrible. Baltimore could easily be sitting at 0-5 had they not caught a few breaks. They got Jacksonville on an off week and opened with Buffalo who could not find a rhythm. If Baltimore faced Buffalo now, the Bills would have ran buckshot on them. The Giants have been waiting for a big game from their offense this year and this may be the venue where things finally start to go their way. This is not the Baltimore defense of old with Ray Lewis at the helm. This unit has taken advantage of poor offenses and thus they are putting up deceptively good numbers. These figures are fool’s gold and with the Giants positioned to be another victim, deception may be the culprit persuading takers to stay off the Giants even if the consensus fancies them for the most part.
The Giants have been bitten by some bitter defeats as of late on the road and now they return home to where they have enjoyed home field advantage historically. The G-Men and the Birds are a virtual toss-up at a neutral site that is why the books gave the Giants only three points at home to spot to the Ravens by virtue of the implication. The Ravens’ offense is absolutely abhorrent, far worse than the Giants. The Giants have the potential to breakout at any point. Let us not fail to mention that Victor Cruz and Odell Beckham, Jr. remain in the ranks of Big Blue and that in itself is worth banking on in this situation against a maligned Baltimore offense.
We are simply going to approach this one yet again from the perspective of home field advantage. More of the public is astute to the upside in the Giants as this is where they squeaked by the Cowboys in Week One. The Giants found themselves in a similar situation against the New Orleans Saints but failed to cover that time around. Still, Baltimore never really has had their act together to begin with and now they are tasked with venturing in to a ruthless and raucous environment like MetLife Stadium. These variables serve as prime rationale for us to spot the home points. Giants against the line is the call in what may very well be a very sloppy game won by efficiency in the Special Teams department. This game will likely be settled by a critical field goal as the offenses in their own right are still very unpredictable.
KEITH’s Pick to Cover the Point Spread: As noted above, I think this game game could very well come down to a last minute field goal. With that being said, I'd recommend either throwing the Giants into a teaser of some sort or passing.
