Super Bowl Odds are out and bettors are flocking to the windows (and their computers) to place place their wagers on "the big game" at Lucas Oil Field on Sunday, February 5th, 2012.
Early action shows that 61% of the public are favoring the New York Giants as a +3 point underdog. The line actually opened with the New England Patriots being -3.5 favorites, but it has moved a half point because of the one-sided action.
Don't think for a second that means anything of any value. The line move wasn't because of sharp action. Most sharp bettors/wiseguys are predicting that the Patriots, with their new and improved defense, will win and cover the -3 leaving the general betting public (squares) ripping up their tickets post game.
The New England Patriots (Odds to Win Super Bowl XLVI: -3 (-105) at Bovada Sportsbook) behind QB Tom Brady, represent the AFC and have scorched opponents this year by utilizing numerous weapons in both the passing and running game. If you watched Pats games this year it seemed as if though there was always somebody open.
If opposing defenses tried to cheat the pass, Brady would wisely run a draw to one of many running backs and at times even hands the ball off to TE Aaron Hernandez. It will be interesting to see how a Giants aggressive defensive line will do vs. a Patriot offensive line that seems to show no signs of leaking.
One might look to the defensive numbers of the Patriots to find weakness, but you can throw those digits out the window as the teams defense seems to have come out of nowhere showing strong in all of their playoff games (Vince Wilfork anyone?).
Getting back to the offense, many dislike Head Coach Bill Belichick but you have to give him props where props are due; the dude flat out knows how to outfox opposing defenses. Look for the Giants to pressure Brady and for Brady to come out on top using short-quick passing routes relying on receivers to get YAC (yards after catch). He surely has the tools to achieve this.
The New York Giants (Odds to Win the 2012 Super Bowl: +3 at Intertops Sportsbook) who represent the NFC, come into SB 46 as hot as can be with Eli Manning hitting on all cyclinders. Nobody gave Eli Manning and company a chance when they went to Lambeau Field and spanked the Packers. Then, they did it again on 1/22 going toe to to with the red hot San Francisco 49ers and on Niner turf to boot!
The Giant defense struggled a times this season but has come up big as of late, making big plays when big plays were necessary. Defensive End "JPP" has looked nothing short of a monster. It will take all they have to shut down Brady and company on February 5th.
