A fun way to bet on football games is to do so using teasers. Especially if your like me and always seem to lose the game by a point!
A teaser bet is kind of like a parlay wager. You pick 2 or more teams against the spread but the difference is that when you tease a game it allows you to move the point spread by "x" amount of points, depending on the type of teaser you play. Just like a parlay, if one game fails to cover the spread, your bet is a loser.
The standard teaser is a 2 team 6 pointer with odds of -110. Odds vary from sportsbook to sportsbook however this is the norm for a two team six pointer. Let's take a look at an example of regular spreads and then the end result after a 6 point tease:
Seattle Seahawks +6
Chicago Bears -6
Tampa Bay Bucaneers +10
Indianapolis Colts -10
Let's say you wanted to bet on the Bears and Colts. You would knock 6 points off each creating a spread of Chicago at a pickem and the Colts at -4. You don't have to pick the favorites though. You could make Seattle +12, Chicago pickem, Tampa +16 or the Colts -4. Your choice! We just gave an example of a favorite getting teased down because that's what most bettors look to do when playing this type of bet as you get some decent betting value when crossing key numbers.
To further expand on the key numbers issue, it's very advantageous when you can use the extra 6 points to capture these key numbers. For example, you can tease a team that is +2.5 up to +8.5. Then, you hit the key numbers of 3, 4, 6 and 7. Or, vice versa, tease a team down from -8.5 to -2.5. Another excellent move is to tease a team from +1.5 up to + 7.5. Then you capture the key numbers of 3, 4, 6 and 7 as well. In case your wondering, "key numbers" are margins that are often times the spread of the actual final score.
You can also involve totals as part of your teaser wager. This is highly recommended as totals are easier to beat than sides (point spreads) and your not having to pay any more to move the total than you are to move the spread.
