The NHL puckline is also called the Canadian line at some sportsbooks. Be sure to check the wording used at your preferred sportsbook before placing your bets. A puckline is a 1.5-goal spread placed on the moneyline favorite that has an effect on the odds and payouts for the game. To show how the addition of this 1.5-goal spread changed the odds, we'll use the same example we used when talking about the moneyline.
Here's our NHL moneyline example:
New Jersey +135
And here's the NHL puckline odds for the same game:
New Jersey +1.5 (-230)
Philadelphia -1.5 (+190)
With the addition of a 1.5-goal spread to cover, Philadelphia is now a +190 underdog. For anyone that missed the moneyline tutorial, that means on a $100 winning bet, the profit would be $190. However, if you were to bet on Philadelphia on the puckline, the Flyers must win by at least two goals to cover the spread and win your bet. The addition of the 1.5-goal spread essentially means Philadelphia starts the game trailing New Jersey by 1.5 goals. That's why to cover the puckline spread, Philadelphia must win by at least two goals.
The addition of the 1.5-goal spread also means that New Jersey is now a -230 favorite. So, to win $100 profit you would have to wager (risk/lay) $230. To win a wager on New Jersey, they don't have to win the game. New Jersey simply has to lose by less than two goals to cover the 1.5-goal spread for you to get paid.
For example if New Jersey was to lose 3-2, anyone betting them on the moneyline would get paid because Philadelphia did not cover the 1.5-goal spread.
Betting the puckline can be highly profitable when you expect a moneyline favorite to win in a blowout and easily cover the puckline spread. Just look at the example. If Philadelphia was to beat New Jersey 5-2 on a moneyline wager you would be paid only $64.50 on a $100 bet, compared to $190 on the same $100 bet on the puckline.
