Take a Punt on the Puck
by Richard of

If phrases like slap shot, wrap around, puck, faceoff and Sidney Crosby mean nothing to you, then chances are you’re not a fan of the National Hockey League. One of the most popular and entertaining sports in North America, the NHL is full of excitement, action, speed, skill and, of course, bust-ups between players. For betting fans there are stacks of options, both in-game and outright, which make it not only a top sport to watch on TV but one that could return you some serious cash.

Starting back in 1917 there are currently 30 teams in the NHL – 23 from the US and seven from Canada, with the Las Vegas Golden Knights joining in 2017-18. The teams are divided into Eastern and Western Conference with two divisions in each – Atlantic, Metropolitan, Central and Pacific. The top eight clubs from each conference battle through to the Stanley Cup playoffs and eventually the Stanley Cup final. The Montreal Canadiens are the current Stanley Cup holders and also top the Atlantic Division in 2016-17 with 41 points and a 19/6 record. The New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks are also sitting pretty in their respective divisions.

Individually, Crosby could be the forward to back to finish with the most goals. The Pittsburgh Penguins superstar already has 20 in 22 games this season, keeping him ahead of David Pastrnak (18) of the Boston Bruins and Winnipeg Jets’ Patrik Laine (17). But predicting game winners and top goal scorers is just the tip of the, er, iceberg in NHL! Take a look at the upcoming fixtures and scroll down to see the fun you can have. Crosby’s Penguins have short odds to win the playoffs, slightly ahead of the Washington Capitals. You can also check out what’s being offered for players to score one, two or three points during a game, plus a double chance during regular time. Don’t forget that there are also helpful form stats on teams and players to read up on to assist you in making the most informed choices when betting.

Predicting what the total goal count will be during regular time has always been a popular one for hockey fans, plus it’s relatively simple for newcomers to take a punt. This type of bet can then be divided into total goals for the home and away team and then the correct score. Usually over 50 combinations are offered here and, for example, if you think the Penguins will steamroll the Arizona Coyotes 9-2 you could get odds of 500/1. Crosby will need to be on his game, and sitting the goaltender on the ice plenty of times, for a goal-crazy result like that to come through. Various match event bets can also be wagered. Home team/away team to win without conceding a goal, away team to score first and win the match and home team to win after being a goal behind are just some of these.

So if you fancy backing the Penguins to retain the Stanley Cup in April, which would be their fifth triumph in the series, get online and give them your support.
