Omaha Poker: Playing Tips
by Wilson of

Poker players appear to be popping up all over the world now that the game has been thrown into the limelight and featured on TV. The most popular casinos have jumped on board to host the World Series of Poker, One on One challenges, and several more poker related events.

Also, the online poker rooms have blown up in recent years by attracting players with the incentive of winning a seat at the WSOP and other major poker tournaments.

But how do these players sort their way through the thousands of hopefuls who are looking for the “golden” ticket? For starters, experienced players use basic playing strategies to separate themselves from weaker or novice players. Let’s take a look at some basic Omaha playing strategies.

In Omaha you should always play for the nut. The “nut” in this case is a hand that can only lose to quads (four of a kind) or straight flushes.

If you have two pair or trips (3 of a kind) you usually will not win. Normally these hands would be considered pretty solid but not in Omaha as most players will share a similar hand. You’re better off folding and holding out for a more loaded hand.

Stay focused on the “nut” possibility. Always know what the three best hands will be regarding what cards are on the table.

Never raise before the flop unless you have Aces or Kings. Another scenario for a raise before the flop would be if you are un-raised on the button with a strong hand.

The best poker players will get caught bluffing because they want to get caught sometimes. If you mix up your play it will keep your opponents guessing and will eventually help you when you need a big-time move.

Study your opponents religiously! The best time is perhaps when you are not involved in the hand. Look for any signs that may give you an advantage. It could be something as simple as a hand motion to the face or a kink in the neck, but you will only benefit if you really study.

If you get a straight or straight draw you should fold if that’s all you have as it is simply not strong enough of a hand to run against.

Play with patience. Players will often become very impatient and make mistakes. Your job is to be patient and wait for the right time to make your move. It’s almost like a baseball team that is losing by a few runs; if you’re patient and execute well you will eventually get back into the game and even win.

Whether you’re playing online or at The Rio in Vegas, you need to be educated and disciplined. If you study the game and practice potential situations you will be surprised as to how successful you can be in just a short amount of time.

Remember, the best time to gamble is when you are well rested and fully alert. Luck to ya.
