How to Play Caribbean Stud

Caribbean Stud Poker Rules and How to Play
by Jerbeek of

Caribbean Stud Poker is a casino card game where each player and the dealer receives 5 cards. Each player is playing against the dealer to see who can make the best 5 card poker hand. Play begins with each player making an ante bet.

After the ante is made, 5 cards are dealt to each player and the dealer. The player must determine if they want to continue in the game by making a bet of twice the amount of the ante. If they choose not to play they lose their ante bet and fold their hand.

After all bets are made, then the dealer reveals their hand to determine if their hand qualifies to continue the game. If the dealer has a hand with at least a pair or and Ace and King then they will play against the player. If the dealer’s hand does not qualify as a playable hand then the players who remained in the game receive the amount that they wagered in the ante bet.

The winner is based on the best ranking 5 card poker hand. Here are the standard poker hand rankings:

1. Royal Flush (A,K,Q,J,10) of the same suit)
2. Straight Flush (5 cards in a row of the same suit)
3. Four of a kind
4. Full House (3 of a kind and a pair)
5. Flush (5 cards of the same suit)
6. Straight. (5 cards in a row)
7. Three of a kind
8. Two pair
9. One Pair
10. High Card

If the dealer qualifies and wins then the dealer will take both the ante and the additional bets. If the player wins they receive winnings in the amount of their ante bet and the additional bets are paid off depending on what the rank of their hand was. Here is the payout for the hand ranks:

Royal Flush – 100:1
Straight Flush – 50:1
Four of a Kind – 20:1
Full House – 7:1
Flush – 5:1
Straight – 4:1
Three of Kind – 3:1
Two Pair – 2:1
One Pair of less – 1:1

Another option that the player has is that they can pay an additional $1 for the progressive jackpot. If the player receives a flush or better they will receive a payout. This payout is dependent upon the casino’s payout structure. It should be noted that these payouts are made whether the dealer hand qualifies to play or not.

Caribbean Stud Poker is a game that has a large house advantage. The optimal strategy for play is very complicated and even with using it the house advantage is still 5.224%. There are many other games in the casino that afford the player a much better chance of winning.
