Poker Tells: Who Made Who?
by Wilson of

The game of poker is quickly becoming a national pastime considering all of the media exposure along with the online gambling sites which offer a coveted seat to the famous WSOP (World Series of Poker). Poker will test the patience and discipline of all players who attempt to make a run for the pot. But how do the elite players separate themselves from all the rest? The best players know the game inside and out, but they also know how to “read” their opponents. Let’s take a look at some of the most common poker tells. The following tells are what the elite players look for in their opponents.

Watch the eyes

This may seem like a no-brainer, but you really can learn a ton by looking into the eyes of your opponent. If you watch poker on TV you will see players who wear sunglasses or dark tinted glasses to avoid that eye contact. If a player can’t look you in the eye it may be sure tell that they are bluffing.

Facial expressions

Most players, especially young or rookie-like players have trouble hiding their emotions which are often revealed by their face expressions. The best times to pick up on this tell is immediately after a flop, or when they first look at their down cards.

The weak player may be the strongest

If a player appears to be weak or non-aggressive-look out! The weak play is usually a set-up for a later more aggressive move. On the other hand, a strong player who is constantly pushing the bar is more than likely trying to buy the pot and scare off any competition. If you call, you may be rewarded.

Chip checker

Usually a player will check their chips when they are considering a big bet or all-in situation. The elite players can fool people with this move, but in most cases, players are telling the table that they are holding a playable hand.

Post flop peek-a-boo

If a player peeks at their cards after the flop you can assume that they have two different suits. Often time’s players will see the flop and forget which suits they have and peek to see if they have a connection.
