Daniel Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu Biography
by Chad Holloway of Predictem.com

On July 26, 1974, Daniel Negreanu was born in Toronto, Canada. Daniel Negreanu’s parents, Annie and Constantin, had immigrated to Canada from Romania in hopes of providing a better life for their children. At the age of sixteen, Negreanu was well on his way to becoming a professional pool player when he discovered the game of poker being played in back rooms of pool halls. Poker soon became his game of choice, and he decided to leave high school an art credit short of graduating in order to pursue his poker career.

Negreanu quickly built a bankroll by playing in games throughout Toronto, where he met and briefly dated Evelyn Ng, who would eventually become a professional poker player herself. At twenty-one, Negreanu moved to Las Vegas in hopes of taking his poker game to the next level; however, he was unsuccessful, went broke, and ultimately moved back to Toronto to rebuild his bankroll. At the age of twenty-two, Negreanu lost his father and decided it was time to take his life more seriously. He fixed the leaks in his game, rebuilt an adequate bankroll, and moved back to Las Vegas to try again.

In 1997, Negreanu was named the best all around player at Foxwood’s World Poker Open. The following year Negreanu won his first World Series of Poker bracelet by winning the $2,000 Pot Limit Hold’em event, taking home $169,460. Negreanu was twenty-three at the time, which made him the youngest W.S.O.P. bracelet winner in history (a record that was broke in 2004) and earned him the nickname “Kid Poker.” Negreanu has a total of three W.S.O.P. bracelets, the other two coming in the 2003 S.H.O.E. event (which is a blend of seven-card stud, hold’em, Omaha eight-or-better, and seven-card stud eight-or-better) and the 2004 $2,000 Limit Hold’em event. His best year to date came in 2004 when he won the World Poker Tour’s Borgata Poker Open and Five Diamond World Poker Classic, was named Cardplayer’s Player of the Year and the W.S.O.P. Toyota Player of the Year, and finished the year with a staggering $4,465,907 in tournament winnings.

Although 2005 was a slow year for Negreanu, he rebounded in 2006 by winning the W.S.O.P. Circuit Championship event in Tunica for $755,000, placing fifth at the National Heads Up Poker Championship, and taking second at the Tournament of Champions. Negreanu’s other poker accomplishments include being named the 2005 WPT Player of the Year, appearances on Late Night Poker, Poker After Dark, High Stakes Poker, and the Poker Superstars Invitational tournament. Negreanu explained his poker success: “I live by a motto that's pretty simple: ‘Don't do anything stupid.’ I think a lot of pros try to do too much and they're really not having enough faith in their system. A lot of guys try to make something happen when it's not necessary. I don't give up, I don't get paranoid or stressed out, I just play.”

In December 2005, Negreanu started Full Contact Poker, which operated as an online card room until 2007 when Negreanu became a member of Team Poker Stars, the site then reverted to an online forum and informational site. In 2006, he was featured in the poker video game, Stacked with Daniel Negreanu.

An avid golfer, NHL fan, and vegan, Negreanu is a very open person who likes to talk about his personal life. On August 19, 2005, Negreanu married Lori Lin Weber, but the two decided to separate in November 2007. Aside from writing an online blog, Negreanu has written a chapter in Doyle Brunson’s Super System 2 and released Hold’em Wisdom for all players in 2007. He is slated to release Daniel Negreanu’s Power Hold’em Strategy in 2008. Negreanu currently resides in Las Vegas, Nevada and has career lifetime tournament earnings totaling more than $9 million.
