Facebook and Poker

Facebook and Poker
by Chad Holloway of

When I first started getting involved in the poker business, I decided that making contacts in the industry was essential. After pondering on how to best go about this, I decided that utilizing Facebook was an excellent option; after all it is a social networking site. Now, Iíve been using Facebook for a long time; heck, Iíve been using Facebook since MySpace was cool. Seriously, I have been using Facebook when you needed to have a valid college e-mail address to open an account. Thatís right, Facebook used to be somewhat exclusive. Now, most everyone is on Facebook, including poker players.

So how does one go about finding poker players on Facebook? Itís easy, just search for some of your favorite players in the search box. I guarantee youíll come up with some results. You will need to be careful though, since there are a lot of fake profiles. Once youíve added a poker friend or two check out their list of friends. This is what I did and I just started friend requesting any poker player I had heard of. Before long, I had a laundry list of Facebook poker friends including Greg Raymer, Tom Dwan, Alec Torelli, and David ďDevilfishĒ Ulliot. Not all of the requests were approved, which is understandable considering some want to keep their profiles private, but the vast majority of these poker celebrities were happy to add me as a friend.

Now what are the possible benefits of having all these poker players as friends on Facebook? There are actually quite a lot. First, youíll be able to get to know your favorite players on a more personal level. Youíll be able to check out their profiles, get status updates, and even peruse their photos. This is one of my favorite benefits. Itís always cool when players post recent poker pics that they've taken at their most recent tournament (Itís like a ďbehind-the-scenesĒ look).

Many poker pros also have their Facebook account intertwined with their Twitter accounts, which means you can get up to the minute tournament updates on Facebook. As someone heavily invested in the poker industry, I can tell you that news, especially tournament news, spreads much faster via Facebook and Twitter than on any poker website.

The other great thing about having these Facebook friends is that it has allowed me a great avenue to interviews. As a poker writer, I often have to conduct interviews with various players. Tracking these players down and scheduling a time can prove tiresome, but with Facebook it is a breeze. I have instantaneous access through the chat option or can just send a message. This is something you could do as well if you have a few questions for your poker idol, but donít be discouraged if you donít receive a response right away; after all, they are professional poker players and can be quite busy. If you have a Facebook profile and enjoy poker, I highly recommend you take some time to look-up poker players; you might just be surprised at what you find.
