Howard Lederer Biography

Howard Lederer Biography
by Chad Holloway of Predictem.com

Howard Lederer was born in Concord, New Hampshire on October 30, 1964. Lederer was a young chess talent who decided to move to New York at the age of 18 in order to attend Columbia University and play chess professionally. Lederer, who had played cards against his family growing up, discovered poker being played in the same gaming rooms that hosted chess and backgammon. He started playing between sixty to eighty hours a week, but ended up losing more often than he won. Eventually, Lederer ended up playing at the famed Mayfair Club alongside future professionals such as Erik Seidel and Dan Harrington. It was during these Mayfair games that Lederer gained experience and quickly improved his game.

Since moving to Las Vegas in 1993, Lederer has had many poker accomplishments. He currently has two World Series of Poker bracelets, one for the 2000 W.S.O.P. $5,000 Omaha eight-or-better event and the other for the 2001 W.S.O.P. $5,000 deuce-to-seven draw event. In 2002, Lederer won the World Poker Tour Championship at Foxwoods Casino and followed that up with a victory at the WPT Party Poker Million in 2003. That same year he was named the WPT's Player of the Year. Lederer has also won an impressive three Bellagio Five-Star World Poker Classic events, a 2003 $2,500 No Limit Hold'em event, a 2004 $2,500 No Limit Hold'em event, and a 2004 $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha event. His other poker milestones include appearing on Poker After Dark and providing commentary for FullTiltPoker.Net's "Learn from the Pros" and FSN's "Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament." Though he is primarily a cash game player, Lederer takes his tournament play quite seriously. During the 2003 W.S.O.P., he kept a diary which documented his tournament experience: "I have started to focus solely on how I am playing, what my chip position is, and who at my table can be outplayed. Worrying about how other players at other tables are doing is counter-productive and I have basically eliminated it from my game."

Lederer's calm demeanor and analytical style has garnered him the nickname "The Professor". He is the co-founder and co-owner, along with Ray Bitor, of "Tiltware Inc," the creators of Full Tilt Poker; as such, Lederer is the President of Full Tilt Poker. Lederer, who stands an imposing 6'5" tall, was obese most of his life but opted to undergo gastric bypass surgery in order to lose weight. After his drastic weight loss, Doyle Brunson gave him another nickname which seemed to stick, "Bubba," (later shortened to just "Bub"). Lederer, who is a devote Vegan, was involved in one of Vegas' more infamous prop bets. Fellow poker professional, David Grey, challenged Lederer to eat a single cheeseburger, which he quickly did to win a $10,000 bet. Lederer is the older brother of professional poker player, Annie Duke, and of author Katy Lederer, who wrote a book about the Lederer family called Poker Face: A Girlhood Among Gamblers. Lederer, whose hobbies include chess, golf, and going to the movies, currently resides in Las Vegas with his wife, Suzie, and his son, Mattias. He has lifetime tournament earnings totaling more than $4.7 million.
