Joseph Hachem

Joseph Hachem Biography
by Chad Holloway of

Joseph Hachem was born on March 11, 1966 in Lebanon. In 1972, Hachem relocated to Melbourne, Australia. He eventually became a chiropractor, but was forced to quit in 2002 due to a rare blood disorder that affected his hands. It was during this time that Hachem concentrated on his poker game in order to support his wife and four children. He had been playing poker online and in Australian casinos for nearly ten years, but it wasn't until the 2005 World Series of Poker in Las Vegas that Hachem made his mark on the poker world; although, he almost didn't make the trip:

"This is exactly what happened: I said to my wife in March, 'Honey, I really want to go to the World Series this year. I'd promise you I'll take the family, but unfortunately, I can't. I want to go, but I can't tell you I'd feel right on my own, blah blah blah.' I'm trying to get her to say, 'Go, honey,' but she just smirked at me, said, 'I'm glad you told me that,' and walked out of the room. A few of my friends had decided to go, which made me more eager. When's the next time we're all going to be able to go together? Then we were on holiday, my wife and my whole family. And we're sitting on the beach and she says, 'Honey, why don't you go to Vegas this year with your friends? Take two weeks off. Don't worry; I'll look after the kids.' 'Are you serious?' I was absolutely stunned. I couldn't believe it. I had to return to Melbourne before the family and I booked the trip. Then my wife said, 'I have to speak to you about Vegas,' and I said, 'It's too late. It's already booked.'

While at the W.S.O.P., Hachem barely missed a final table appearance, finishing tenth at the $1,000 No Limit Hold'em Rebuy Event ($25,850). He used his success to pay his way into the 2005 W.S.O.P. Main Event, where he conquered a field of 5,618 players to capture the World Championship and the $7.5 million first prize. With cheers of "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi! Oi! Oi!" from the crowd, Hachem became the first Australian, and fourth non-American, to win the championship. Hachem reacted to winning the title by saying, "I can't believe what I've achieved. Every player's dream-I've been fortunate enough to achieve it. In one year-the first time." The following year, Hachem captured the 2006 World Poker Tour's Bellagio Five Diamond World Poker Classic for $2,182,075, and became one of only four players to hold both a W.S.O.P. World Championship title and a WPT title.

Hachem's other poker accomplishments include finishing second to Dutch Boyd in the 2006 W.S.O.P. $2,500 Short-Handed No Limit Hold'em Event, finishing fourth at the 2006 W.S.O.P. $2,500 Pot Limit Hold'em Event, and strongly defending his world title by outlasting 97.2% of the field to finish 238th at the 2006 W.S.O.P. Main Event ($42,882). He also has appearances on Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament, Poker After Dark, and NBC's National Heads-Up Poker Championship. Hachem, a member of Team Poker Stars who often utters his catchphrase of "Pass the sugar," has lifetime tournament winnings in excess of $10.7 million and shows no sign of slowing down: "I really want to continue increasing the dignity of poker. When these young players look at Joe Hachem, the world champion, they'll see someone dressed nicely, well-presented, playing the game at the highest level, and holding himself well. And playing the game as a sport and not something with a dicey edge."
