Kathy Liebert

Kathy Liebert Biography
by Chad Holloway of Predictem.com

Kathy Liebert was born on October 1, 1967 in Nashville, Tennessee. She was raised on Long Island in New York, and later attained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marist College in Poughkeepsie. From here she got an executive job with Dun & Bradstreet, but soon tired of the corporate life. Through wise investments in the stock market, Liebert was financially able to quit her job and travel the country. With encouragement from her mother, Liebert set out west in a pursuit of happiness. It was in Central City and Blackhawk, Colorado that she found solace skiing the slopes and playing poker in the casino.

Liebert grew up watching her parents play nickel and dime poker, but it wasn’t until 1991 that she began finding success on her own. It was then that she was offered a position as a prop player at her local casino. This eventually led Liebert to tournament poker in Las Vegas, where two second place finishes in one week won her $34,000. Liebert’s professional poker career had begun.

Liebert is considered to be a pioneer for women in poker claiming, "There's no question the top women players can hold their own anywhere. They are very competitive with the top male players. The fact is, the top female poker players are among the top players period." She was the first woman ever to win a tournament with a buy-in of $5,000 or more, the first woman to win a tournament with a first place prize of $1 million, and the first woman to reach over $3 million in lifetime tournament winnings. However, Liebert is careful to de-emphasize the role of gender as it relates to the success of women poker players: "We have distinguished ourselves as good players, not just good female players."

Liebert has one World Series of Poker bracelet for a victory in the 2004 $1,500 Limit Texas Hold’em Shootout event. She also placed seventeenth in the 2000 W.S.O.P. for $39,120. Her other poker accomplishments include winning the 2002 Party Poker Million (which made her the first woman to win a tournament with a $1 million prize), placing third at the World Poker Tour’s Borgata Poker Open, making WPT final tables at both the 2006 World Poker Finals and 2007 Poker Classic, winning Poker Royale: Battle of the Sexes, as well as appearances on Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament and the WPT’s 2003 Ladies Night Invitational. In regards to her poker lifestyles, Liebert has said, “It’s great when you’re winning, it’s a lot of fun and can be a lot of money, but at the same time it can be very stressful especially when you’re on a losing streak.”

Liebert, who plays online under the name “PokerKat,” is the poker coach for actor James Woods. She has formerly been involved with 1983 W.S.O.P. World Champion, Tom McEvoy, with whom she remains close friends. Liebert currently splits her time between Las Vegas, Nevada and Downey, California. Her lifetime tournament winnings are in excess of $4 million.
