Liz Lieu Biography

Liz Lieu Biography
by Chad Holloway of Predictem.com

Liz Lieu was born on August 2, 1974 in Vietnam. A year after she was born, her family relocated to the United States, settling in Colorado. At the age of thirteen, Lieu fell in love with cards after playing Chinese Poker with some of her friends. When she turned eighteen, she started her own home game with a friend and immediately began to improve her game. Not long after, Lieu’s father suffered a heart attack, which prompted her to step up her game so she could support her family. After she built up a respectable bankroll, Lieu went to Las Vegas to become a poker professional:

“I have been playing poker since I was 18, but only professionally for the last four years. I always felt that I had the drive to do this and I am so happy to see that I was right. I have never used coaches and have instead preferred to use my own mistakes and experience as my teachers. I didn’t have a huge bankroll to start out, but was successful playing $20-$40 from the beginning. Having that kind of success from the onset really gave me the confidence to keep with it.”

Lieu quickly became a respected Limit Hold’em cash game player, and initially played in only these types of side games. It wasn’t until the 2005 World Series of Poker that Lieu’s best friend and fellow poker pro, John Phan, encouraged her to try tournaments. Lieu did just that and immediately found success, placing fifth in the $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em event ($168,000) and 12th in the $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em event. Though she has yet to win a W.S.O.P. bracelet, Lieu has set her sights on the tournament circuit, "I’m very determined to win a bracelet, and I see a bright future for me in poker. I learn something new every time I play and will only continue to improve my game." Lieu’s first tournament victory came in the $1,000 Limit Hold’em event at the 2006 L.A. Poker Classic at the Commerce Casino. The following year, she outlasted 450 players to win the $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em event at the 2007 L.A. Poker Classic ($148,000). Lieu’s other poker accomplishments include two World Poker Tour cashes and appearing on various magazine covers including: Deal, American Poker Player, Maxim’s Total Poker, Woman Poker Player, World Poker Tour, Flush, Maximal, Poker Pro Europe, and Poker Pro France.

Lieu, who is nicknamed the “Poker Diva” because of her flair for style, is the poker ambassador for Chilipoker. She selflessly donates twenty-percent of her tournament winnings to charity, having stated, “ . . . when all is said and done, I guess I’m very happy with the cards life has dealt me. Since seeing the depths of poverty with my own eyes, I am going to be even more dedicated to helping others.” Lieu, who enjoys shopping, dancing, and spending time with her family and friends, has more than $650,000 in career tournament earnings.
