Mansour Matloubi Biography
by Chad Holloway of Predictem.com
Mansour Matloubi, an Iranian expatriate, moved to Cardiff, Wales in 1972. An avid poker player, Matloubi decided to join a group of his fellow countrymen and travel to the 1990 World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was here that Matloubi accomplished the unthinkable. The 1992 W.S.O.P. program explains:
"He [Matloubi] quietly and calmly played through the first three days of this grueling contest to survive to the final table. No one had taken particular notice of him until he showed up for the start of play on the fourth and final day. On that fateful day he took the proverbial rollercoaster ride as he repeatedly came back from the brink of disaster drawing a desperately needed last card to win several crucial pots."
One such crucial pot, which has been called "the most incredible hand in W.S.O.P. history," occurred when Matloubi raised to $75,000 with 10c 10d and was called by Hans "Tuna" Lund's Ac 9d. The flop came 9s 2c 4d and eventually all of the money found its way into the middle of the table, with Matloubi's tournament life on the line. The As on the turn gave Lund the lead and seemed to be the final nail in Matloubi's coffin; however, the miracle 10s fell on the river and Matloubi survived! Matloubi won the final hand of the tournament when his pocket sixes held up against Lund's pocket fours.
This concluded a tough final table that included (in order of their finish) Lund ($334,000), Dave Crunkleton ($167,000), Jim Ward ($91,850), Berry Johnston (75,150), Al Krux ($58,450), Rod Peate ($50,100), John Bonetti ($33,400), and Stu Ungar ($25,050). Matloubi became the 1990 W.S.O.P. World Champion, the first foreign national to win the title, and took home the $835,000 first place prize. "I never thought I would win it," Matloubi said, "I've been playing Texas Hold'Em only a short time. Although it seemed that luck was on my side, I believe I played all those hands correctly. I had the best opening cards every time I made those big bets."
Matloubi's other poker accomplishments include finishing fourth at the 1993 W.S.O.P. Main Event ($120,000), second in the 1994 W.S.O.P. Limit 7 Card Stud ($67,800), fourth in the 1994 W.S.O.P. No Limit Deuce to Seven Lowball ($28,500), sixteenth at the 1994 W.S.O.P. Main Event ($20,160), third in the 1994 Diamond Jim Brady ($49,200), fourth in the 1995 W.S.O.P. Limit 7 Card Stud ($21,000), sixth in the 1997 W.S.O.P. Pot Limit Omaha ($20,588), second in the 2000 California State Poker Classic ($29,070), and thirteenth in the 2006 Betfair Asian Poker Tour ($14,570). He currently resides in London, England and has lifetime tournament winnings in excess of $1.9 million.
