Poker Article: I Ain't Scared; No You're Stupid

“I ain’t scared.” No you’re stupid.
by Hank Cashman of

I am getting so tired of hearing players say they aren’t scared just to cover up their stupidity. Another phrase they love is, “It’s only a thousand dollar game. I have plenty of money.” These phrases also usually accompanied by large amounts of beer and a desire to cover up short comings.

I give in to the point that “scared money” never wins. But, just tossing money in to lose is stupid. We love the extra money but you ruin the game.

In poker we use chips to disassociate money from the game. We want to play with pieces of clay and not our rent money. By doing this we will play a better game. The fear of losing chips isn’t as bad as the fear of losing “real” money.

I was recently in a hundred dollar re-buy tournament. In a re-buy tournament some players play a little loose and take more risks early in the game. This is simply because they can re-buy and it builds the pot. That’s great. In a re-buy tournament you should be prepared to make a few re-buys and add-ons.

What gets me is the guy that plays very loose and aggressive. This guy calls and raises with mediocre hands that have a very small chance of winning. That’s one thing but he keeps telling the table he’s not scared to play and ends up re-buying 21 times. That’s right; he had 2,100 in a 100 game. He had to get second place to break even.

Don’t get me wrong, by the time we condensed tables we all went to the other tables with big stacks. Thank you Mr. Fearless for your donation.

In cash games, I love the “I’m not scared” players. They give me money. They think that overly aggressive play will overcome good players. Oops, wrong again. Just tossing chips and raising with junk doesn’t make you a better player. It just makes you a broke player.

Tossing in chips and saying you’re not scared is letting the other players know that you are willing to waste money. You are willing to gamble on the long shot instead of playing good poker.

Just to let you know, I’m not scared of the “not scared” players. I believe that a good solid adherence to good poker basics and strategy should never be scared. Throw in a little luck and a bluff or two and you have a winning combination.

One more thing for you to think about; while you are proclaiming your fearlessness remember that you are giving out too much information. A smart player will show how smart and fearless they are by accumulating chips. They don’t need to tell how good they are, the chips speak for them.

Next time you feel like saying you’re not scared; just say “I’m not scared. I’m stupid and broke.” If you’re scared say you’re scared. If you’re stupid keep it to yourself. We'll find out soon enough.
