Women in Poker: Battle of the Sexes
by Hank Cashman of

I love women. I love to play poker with them. But, I just wish they didnít think of it as a ďteamĒ sport.

Not meaning to stereotype, be sexist or just group all of them together, women play poker differently than men. I believe that women are inherently more patient. They can be just as aggressive as a man but are not usually willing to charge ahead unprepared.

Women automatically support each other if there is a man in the competition. Of course it would be difficult for men to always support the men in a game since there are more of them. You can always find who was the last woman standing in a poker tournament because women want to know if the gender is progressing in taking over the sport.

In some home and league games, women will team up on the guys to use their combined effort to put a guy out of a tournament. Itís unspoken but it is there. I havenít infiltrated where they come up with their battle plan but I know itís out there somewhere.

I was at a bar game last week and one of the tables had four women sitting at it. The seating was random so you could sit where ever you wanted to. As the players came into the room, every man avoided that table. By the time the game got started the table was all women. OK, the men were scared and intimidated.

As the tournament progressed the tables were combined from four to one. The final table became four men and four women. Let the battle begin. It was a massacre.

The game proceeded with the women playing to put out which ever man was short stacked. Now, I know this is a good strategy but again this is not supposed to be a team effort.

The short stacked woman was being protected. If she was in a hand the others would check or fold to keep her in. When a guy challenged the short stacked woman another woman would stay in to protect her. If it was the short stacked guy in the hand it was calls and big raises to force him out. Does this sound paranoid?

Anyway, the final four of the game was three guys and one woman. All the guys that had been put out of the game were up front playing pool and drinking. All of the women that had left the game surrounded the table and became the new cheerleaders for the one woman left in the game.

When the game was down to three players, one woman and two guys, they split the pot and you would have thought the woman had won the game. The chip stacks were about even with the woman in second place. But, there was celebration in the womenís corner.

Women are very good poker players and are due respect. They are becoming a bigger force in the game because their numbers continue to grow. Maybe, after they win a few more major tournaments this team mentality will subside.

Who am I kidding? They still go to the restrooms together and some think they will vote for a Presidential candidate just because itís a woman. Oh well, I still like to play with them.

Keep the cards and chips flying.
