Roulette: Betting on Black

Roulette: Betting on Black
by Jason Green of

On a Roulette wheel there are 18 black numbers and 18 red numbers. There are many types of Roulette bets you can make and numerous betting combinations. There are inside bets and outside bets that you can make. The inside bets are the best that you can make on the 36 numbers on the betting table. The outside bets are the boxes that are outside the 36 numbers on the betting table.

One of the outside bets is the "black bet." There is a black box outside the 36 numbers on the betting table and by placing a bet on the black box you are betting that on the spin that you bet on, if the ball lands on any of the one 18 black numbers you win the bet. Many people think that since there are 18 red numbers and 18 red numbers that they have a 50% chance of winning that bet. This is an incorrect assumption.

The casino,(house) has to make money and to do that they have a house edge. The house edge in Roulette is shown by the green zero or zeros on the wheel. In European Roulette there is only one zero box and in American Roulette there are 2 boxes, one zero and a double zero In European Roulette there is a house edge of 2.7% and with American Roulette there is a house edge of 5.3%. As you can see there is a better house edge with American Roulette, as with 2 zeros instead of 1 there is more of a chance that with every spin that it will hit on of the 2 green zero boxes.

The black bet can be made by itself a combination of bets, such as betting on black and then various numbers or other boxes. Whatever the betting minimum is on the table is the minimum amount that you can bet on black. For example, if the minimum bet is $5, then $5 is the minimum amount you can bet on black. Also, there is generally a maximum bet and just like the minimum bet whatever the maximum bet is it means that is the max you bet on the table on one spin. For example, if the table maximum is $1,000 that is the max amount you can bet on the whole table. You can bet $1,000 on one bet, such as black, or spread it around the table with different bets, but you cannot surpass the $1,000. As a general rule of thumb, you will find lower limits online than in real land based casinos.
