How to Bet on Soccer

Considering that soccer is so popular around the world there are tons of bets that you can make on a soccer match. There are many more bets than just wagering on the outcome of the match and the Over/Under. But, let's just concentrate on the basics of soccer right now.

This article is for those that are new to the soccer betting game and the easiest bets to make. If you go to a sportsbook you will generally see a game line like this:

Inter Milan vs. AC Milan 1- 2.3 - X 3.3 - 2 - 3.2

OK, so what does this mean? The Home team will always be shown first, so in this example Inter Milan is playing at home.

Here is what the symbols signify:

- 1 - If you want to bet Inter Milan you will take 1, as they are the home team. The 2.3 are the odds that you are getting for Inter Milan to win. So, if you bet $10 on Inter Milan to win, you will get $23, as $10 x 2.3 = $23.

- X - The X signifies a draw in a match. If you bet the X in this example you are betting that the game will end in a draw.

- 2 - The 2 signifies the away team. If you bet the 2 you are betting that AC Milan will win the match.

It's that easy, as the match outcome is not difficult to understand. Many sportsbooks will show a line like this:

Manchester United vs. Arsenal 1 - 1.9 - X 3.5 - 2 - 3.9 - 1X -1.3 -2X 1.5 -1/2 1.25

The above example showed you what the first 3 bets are, but what are the other ones?

- 1X - This is a win/draw for the home team. In this example if you make the 1X bet, you are betting that Manchester United will either win the game or it will be a draw.

- 2X - This is win/draw for the away team. In this example if you make the 2X bet, you are betting that Arsenal will either win that game or it will be a draw.

- 1/2 - This signifies that there will be a winner in this game. In this example if you make the 1/2 bet, you are betting that there will be a winner in this match. The only way that you would lose this wager is if the match were to end in a draw.

The odds for these last 3 bets are not great, but you are covering yourself in case of a draw with the 1X and 2X bets. These last 3 bets will not make you rich, but they can be good to make if you put a significant amount on a game or you want to make multiple (parlay) wagers.

You should know that the final betting score of a game is the game at the end of regulation time. If the game goes into Extra Time or there is penalty kicks it does not matter, as whatever the score is at the end of regulation time is the final betting score. For example, if Spain is playing Croatia in the European Championships Semifinals and the score is 1-1 at the end of regulation time, then 1-1 is the final betting score. If you bet that Croatia would win and they score in Extra Time, you will lose the bet, as 1-1 was the score at the end of regulation. Conversely, if you bet the draw in this match and Croatia scored in Extra time, you would still win the bet, as, again, the score after regulation is the final betting score.
